An equal number of projects are in various stages of completion

Visakhapatnam: Four of the eight irrigation projects taken up as part of the Jalayagnam programme in three costal districts of Srikakulam, Vizainagaram and Visakhapatnam have been completed and the remaining are at various stages of completion.

While the Peddagedda project (Vizianagaram district) with an ayacut of 12,000 acres and the Pedderu project (Visakhapatnam district) with an ayacut of 19,969 have been completed, the Jhanjavathi project, with a contemplated ayacut of 24,640 acres, is nearing completion.

Of the estimated cost of Rs.123 crores, a sum of Rs.115 crores has already been spent. An extent of 21,210 acres of ayacut has been developed. The remaining work will be completed by December this year.

Chief Engineer (north coastal projects) Prasada Rao says some 65 per cent of the Thotapalli project has been completed and water will be made available to the proposed new ayacut from kharif next. The Rs. 450-crore project aims at providing 1.20 lakh acres of new ayacut and stabilisation of existing 64,000 acres. So far, Rs.330 crores has been spent on the project. The 117-km right main canal of the project envisages two aqueducts across the Swarnamukhi (at 17th km) and the Vegavathi (at the 37 km).
Boddepalli project

Regarding the Boddepalli Rajagopala Rao (Vamsadhara) project, nearly 58,000 acres of ayacut has already been developed under Phase I of Stage II programme. While the work of the main canal has been completed, work on structures and distributaries is nearing completion. There are, however, some problems regarding the execution of works of Phase II, which are being sorted out. The project is scheduled to be completed by March 2009.
