naked bro ... the diff between kumble and dhoni is that one takes spontaneous decision where as the other just sticks to the plot and keeps going on and on with out any circumspection ... if u have watched the match live, sehwag was bowling a little more consistent, a tad more than what he would usually do .. sachin, sehwag and to that extent even yuvraj can make the ball spin, which if we talk frankly, even a fraction of that this aussies spinner fella cant do ... but they dont have consistency .. they bowl a ball or two decently and then give away runs and that makes the batsman to kind of settle down and play the waiting game for those loose balls .. but on a day, when such part time bowler gets his rhythm and focus, the capt should realize that and show confidance, otherwise dont put pressure on those off-seasoners .. dhoni does that better than kumble ... though it appears he has lot more luck than kumble | ||

Dhoni is a thinking captain and he can think out of the box when things are not working out well. In the Oz series earlier this year, he didn't use Piyush Chawla and Praveen Kumar till the finals and kept them as his surprise package and it worked really well. He promoted himself in the 2nd test to score quick runs. I feel he utilises his resources well better than previous capn's we had in the past. | ||

Hmm.. I don't know how you extended his viewpoint to winning matches...seems like a far fetched attempt to extent a hypothesis!!! He said most of the game plan is drawn a priori. That doesn't translate into the fact that those strategies are implemented appropriately. Sure thing Sachin and Ganguly can bowl. But when was the last time sachin bowled and when was the last time sehwag bowled. The net sessions are always a valid points of consideration for the captain IMO and I guess the catch is that the pitch was not allowing for any seam movement and traditionally feroz shaw kotla is conducive for spin I guess ( I might be wrong). So in the light of this,his decision is right. All I was saying was that it might not necessarily be a surprising one. I am not trying to discuss whether dhoni is smart or not. My previous posts were solely pertaining to this match and this match alone..(wrt his captaincy) | ||

I agree, he trusts his players a lot and gives them full freedom in dealing with a situation. Good think about him is he always think out of the box and outwit the opposition thinking. Even in his post match presentations, he always comes up with a fitting reply to the question. | ||

This need not be true always, definitely not with team games like cricket. As you see, strategies differ with the potential of the players of the team, as well as the opponents, the ground conditions and many more. It is always a mix-and-match situation to possibly nullify or even get offensive over the opponents. Indeed modern cricket has more discussions in the board rooms, strategies chalked-out up front, plans drawn out and targets set, but seems like Dhoni is one captain, who reins the team, right there on the field. There is one good thing I like about him is that he encourages the team members to play individual cricket for the team, just like what John Nash proposes in "A Beautiful Mind", chaalaa goppa strategy adi, am sure this wasn't ever there in earlier captaincies. | ||

Naked basket, i did not read bob woolmers book. but i always thought a coach is indeed a useless entity in cricket if the captian is smart enough. But Bob woolmers statement you have posted here, confirms my belief. Coach is a need less entity if the captian is a smart guy, just like what Bob woolmer thought about a captain. I think you answered your question through the course of your explanation. A spinner cant turn a ball with a new ball as adeptly as he can do with an old ball and thats very well known. That sehwag was thrown the ball is on the back of previous data set that they have vis-a-vis sehwag as a non standard slower baller. I dont see how it is a point of surprise. When ur speedsters are not getting wickets, it is quite normal to see captains opting for nonstandard techniques. Obv he cudn't have asked mishra to bowl and he is very traditional leg spinner who can tweak the older ball. On the back of this, what are his other options but for sehwag????? | ||

I think this statement is ambiguous anukuntunna andi. If "a" strategy were defined to probably more successful than others and that information is available to everyone then I guess any linear head will chance his arm at that prior to other tactics. I was going through Bob Woolmer's account of cricket and it has section on modern cricket Vs older form of cricket and he clearly delineates his exp in this regard. I seem to agree with him. Sehwag actually shared the new ball with Ishant and in the second over he got Hussey out... You need some creativity to think outside the box and share the new ball with a spinner..when you have 2 successful new ball bowlers ... And you need luck for that spinner to get the wicket with the new ball...and that too the wicket of Hussey (bowled) | ||

I think he is a decent captain if you go by statistics. But. for the heck of me, I can't really comprehend the difference in his approach and some other captain's approach. That sehwag is a known part time bowler begs the question "what would any captain do if his resources are clearly laid out a priori before the match andhe has a need to infuse change?" I would say it would have been a magical captaincy if he would have asked sehwag to bowl even when he was relatively untested at that level. That said, its just the numbers that matter at this level and he is undoubtedly better aligned with that viewpoint. As a batsman though, I would prefer not paying to watch such an ugly cricketer at the crease. | ||
