Hyderabad: Isolated by the major political parties on the issue of Telangana, the Congress on Monday decided to move a resolution on Telangana in the state Assembly on the lines of the one that was adopted recommending reservations for Backward Classes in legislative bodies. âBy moving such a resolution, the Congress hopes to take the wind out of the oppositionâs sails as the BJP and the TDP have been making moves to get such a legislation passed by Parliament,â one leader told TOI. This strategy was reportedly finalised at a meeting which chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy had with Congress chief Sonia Gandhi in Delhi on Monday. According to sources, Rajasekhara Reddy was summoned to New Delhi by Sonia to specifically discuss the Telangana issue. A delegation of opposition leaders led by T Devender Goud had met leaders of major parties including Sonia last week on the separate state issue. Sources said the chief minister struck to his viewpoint that there is no real sentiment on the ground for a separate state. 'However, keeping in view the fact that the Congress is isolated on the issue, it was decided to move a resolution in the state Assembly where the Congress has two thirds majority," one leader remarked. Party sources said the high command had asked Rajasekhara Reddy on Saturday to rush to New Delhi. Upon reaching the national capital on Monday, the chief minister met Sonia's political adviser Ahmed Patel. Later, they both had a long meeting with her. After that, the CM met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at 7 Race Course Road around 6 pm. Apart from the opposition parties, the Telangana Congress leaders too have been mounting pressure on the chief minister to change the party stand on the T issue as they feared that the Congress would be wiped out in Telangana region in case it sticks to its current stance. A few of the Telangana Congress leaders had even threatened to approach the TDP to move a resolution in the state Assembly to which they promised their support. According to reliable sources, the chief minister forcefully argued in favour of a united Andhra Pradesh citing MIM and other Muslim organisations stand against bifurcation. Incidentally, power minister Shabbir Ali also sent a delegation to New Delhi to put forth the same view. The party, the sources said, is under the impression that an assembly resolution would clear the chief minister as being perceived as the lone stumbling block for Telangana formation. "This negative perception has to be removed before the elections," the sources said. Rajasekhara Reddy, however, did not reveal as to what transpired in his meetings with the party president and the Prime Minister. Talking to the media after the meetings, the chief minister backed the apprehensions expressed by the MIM in the proposed Telangana state. "As a big Muslim party, MIM can express its opinion about the creation of Telangana state. The party feels smaller states pose a threat to Muslims. According to MIM, the Telangana concept itself is a game plan of the BJP," the CM said. Similarly, he justified the apprehension of those who were demanding a separate status for Hyderabad. mY Telugu Divine www.gurugeetha.blogspot.com |
