After the recent utterances of AIMIM (All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen), opposing the formation of Telangana, the pro-Telangana leaders started blaming AIMIM leaders for getting soldout to the establishment for their personal gains. However one needs to understand that party with empathy and then make the appropriate efforts to bring them to the pro-Telangana line of thinking. Majlis party(AIMIM) , which essentially has its roots in Telangana region, got reorganized in 1957 after its leadership was passed to Abdul Waheb Owaisi ( a lawyer) from Kasim Razvi. With this reorganisation,AIMIM shed its pre-independence fanaticism and separatism and joined Indian national mainstream with full faith in the constitution of India and its unity and integrity. I hereby cite one instance that shows the intense patriotism of AIMIM. About 20 years ago, when I was watching the telecast of A.P. assembly proceedings, on the occasion of independence day, I saw an AIMIM MLA saying this in his speech: " If someone looks at India with evil eyes, we will pull those eyes out. If anyone raises his hand against India with a bad intention, we will cut that hand down". His emotional speech went on like that saluting India with full commitment. In 1986, when AIMIM became the ruling party of Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, even though Muslims were the main support base of that party, it chose 3 Hindus alternately as its mayors, out of the 5 mayors during those 5 years. That indicates its sincere desire to be a party acceptable to all sections of the Indian society. However, just like any other political party, AIMIM also has to always make sure that its support base is not getting eroded. Of late, it is facing multiple challenges that could diminish its support base. Whenever police are arresting suspected Muslim youth for questioning regarding their links to subversive organisations, large number of people are turning to AIMIM leaders to get them released. If they are unable to get them released they are being accused as ineffective leaders not providing any service to the community. In this process AIMIM needs the support of the ruling party and that is the reason they are questioning the formation of Telangana to curry favor with the people in power. In the past couple of years, leftist parties started making inroads into the support base of AIMIM by gaining considerable support among the poor workers of the old city of Hyderabad. This is causing a lot of discomfort to that party, making it to seek new allies who can bail them out of this situation. That is another reason it is opposing Telangana in its words. Unable to bear the law-abiding patriotic policies of AIMIM, banned jihadi terrorist organisations started threatening its leaders accusing them as kafirs ( infidels ). In this beleaguered situation, they are seeking protection from the government and are unable to make any moves that could hurt the ruling party. In the light of this situation, it is quite understandable that outwardly AIMIM is making statements opposing Telangana. But what lies in their hearts could be unflinching support to Telangana. Instead of accusing AIMIM as a soldout political party, all pro-Telangana parties and intellectuals need to have a comprehensive dialogue with AIMIM leaders and address all their fears and doubts and bring them under the umbrella of pro-Telangana banner. |
