The size of the department matters a lot...." department size matters a lot...I will give u an instance....Caltech graduates hardly 20 Phd's a year in Comp Sci. Compare it to Gatech whose department has a average size of 145 Phd's....Gatech is ranked higher than Caltech...coz bigger the size of the department, higher the volume of funds and more people apply. Same applies with stanford. UCberkeley tho is a huge exception. It has a big department and also an exceptional faculty. UIUC also same case. Very big department but very very good faculty. MIT standard ga medium sized departments unatyi.....personally my manager is MIT pass out and when he sees a guy from Caltech apply, he makes sure that he personally sits on the telephone interview...that is the level of imp Caltech receives...V.V.S. i am not an engg guy...know its a very very very good school (top 10) but maree intha topp anukoledu. thanks for the clarification.
i still remember in 1998 my distant cousin (who has the same name as i do - sreekanth) got admitted into this school. anandam to valla father ukkiri bikkiri aipoyeru and was admitted in the hospital for a bit. he later threw a big party at hotel ramada near begumpet airport. aite why i am surprised is, maa cousin gaadu cheppadam (as of 1998) it was ranked after mit, stanford, ucb, urbana champaign, ann arbor, univ of texas of austin for computer engg discipline...infact he cud not make it to either Stanford (or) UCB at that point of time - think he was on the waiting list or something like that... | ||

this came up as they sent us a report talking about IIT only schools and there are only 3 schools which are branded as IIT only aaceptance Princeton Berkeley MIT Caltech essentially these schools dont look at ur apps if you dont have a IIT degree...but for MIT and berkeley the rest of the schools are not that highly ranked in the top 20 ladder!!! very interesting | ||

That is exaclty why....U wud find Gatech above Caltech and Cornell and UCLA in all rankings but it is relatively easier to get into Gatech than Caltech or Cornell and UCLA!!! | ||

These are stunning figures!!!!!!!!!!!!! Look at Gatech and others....these numbers were rel very low some years ago...with international applications falling drastically....these have shot up tremendously...... It also shows that a higher ranked school need not necessarily be a difficult school to get in!!!!!!! The size of the department matters a lot.... | ||
