True:I think what you are seeing are not fully blown indices, but 'pseudo'-indices which sql server creates as placeholders, to represent column statistics. Amongst other things, statistics store things such as the distribution of the most significant data, and is used by the query optimiser to help decide its execution plan. Normally the auto-creation of these is not a problem, however, the database option auto-create statistics will disable sql server creating them for you. This is not recommended unless you intend to compensate for this by periodically creating and updating the statistics yourself. Maybe someone else can explain what determines whether statistics appear in sp_helpindex or sp_helpstats During my brief tests I was not able to reproduce my statistic indices so that they appeared in the resultset of sp_helpindex. However, one thing I did encounter was two 'hypothetical' indices remaining on one of my tables. These are used by index tuning wizard and should always be dropped after index tuning wizard has completed (the result of a crashed index tuning wizard, or a bug in an earlier service pack). So I learnt something new too
