SC upset with TV programmes, wants guidelines to regulate it SC upset with TV programmes, wants guidelines to regulate it

The Supreme Court is upset with the quality of television programmes shown nowadays.

Questioning the content of TV programmes the court observed, " Can there be a day in 365 days, a family can sit together and watch TV without an assault on basic values?"

The court was hearing a Public Interest Litigation by an NGO Common Cause.

The petition wanted some regulations to curb obscenity on television channels. Notice had already been issued to the Centre. On Wednesday the Centre told the court that TV channels have formed a separate body for headed by former Chief Justice of India JS Varma for self regulation and said state governments are being consulted on the proposed Bill to regulate TV channels.

" I cant forget two incidents shown on TV channels. A person in Patiala immolated himself and everyone was watching. Second was a person in Hyderabad climbed up five floors and announced he would jump. Nobody saved him. But it was shown on TV repeatedly," Justice GS Singhvi, one of the Judges on the Bench said.

" It is a delicate issue. I can not be deciding what people want to see and appoint myself a guardian," Justice Aftab Alam, another Judge in the Bench said.

Now, the case will be taken up after three weeks
