When the time frame envisaged to make Hindi fit enough to be the official language expired, it was generally agreed that it was nowhere near that position. This was inspite of crores of rupees and other resources – badly needed for economic development – being diverted to ’develop’ it. The experiment had miserably failed. Yet, Hindi belt fanatics, like Seth Govind Das, Lal Bahadur Shastri etc, tightened the screws and moved to banish the ’colonial’ language. Everyone else objected except the few who would lose a chance to fatten at the cost of the exchequer. Tamil Nadu almost seceded from the Union on the issue of imposition of Hindi. Senior Congress leaders from Tamil Nadu, like OV Alagesan and C Subramaniam, who were valuable central ministers, resigned their posts in protest.
