Hyderabad: The Congress president, Mrs Sonia Gandhi, has reportedly urged state party units to be ready to face Lok Sabha polls by the end of February 2009. Assembly polls in Andhra Pradesh would also be conducted along with the Lok Sabha polls, two months ahead of schedule. The Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy, who met the party president and other senior leaders in Delhi two days ago, was also asked to gear up for early polls. âYes, we were asked to be ready to face polls sometime in February last week or by first week of March next year,â the Chief Minister told this correspondent. The Centre is likely to formally approach the Election Commission to fix poll dates after the winter session of Parliament is over. As per the provisions 14(2) and 15(2) of Representation of Peopleâs Act, the EC can hold polls six months before the duration of the House expires. Sources said the Congress leadership had pitched for a February poll with the hope that the Kharif crop would be good and its arrival in the market would bring down the price of essential commodities. Dr Reddy has already decided to devote at least two hours every day to review the situation in each districts. |
