the best way is to read books , newspapers and you will always come across interesting ways to use words in different contexts... whenever I find a new word i refer to the dictionary and understand the meaning... and coming to GRE words I haven't completed any alphabet series completely (partly due to my bad memory and my laziness) so I don't remember what words were even listed | ||

IPC, Good advice... reading a variety of literature is critical for a lot of communication. It removes the need for memorising words, spellings or grammar rules as the patterns get registered in the brain and you can detect errors visually Exposure to various genres of material helps you tailor the tone and language your own communication to the audience and occasion... A common problem when first stepping out to interact in public is poor listening skills. People focus so much on getting out what they want to say that they do not register the cues from their audience.They just dump the information without checking on the reception.However well you speak, if the audience does not get it , its a communication failure and you will be perceived as a poor speaker. I would suggest reading newspapers particularly the editorial section...right from my childhood i always read THE HINDU and every time i read an article there were a couple of words which i didn't know and immediately I used to pick up a dictionary and find out the meaning... If u are living in USA read the new york times and wall street journal...don't stop with editorials, read anythinh from recipes to art's and living, fashion etc etc...you will be amazed to know how few words who actually know this helped me a lot when I prepared for GRE ...I didn't even complete the "A" words in Barron's GRE book...i depended on my familiarity with the words and ended with 680...i saw many students who knew the barron's words from A to Z but came up with 380's and 450's remembering words would never help a person to understand the true essence of the word.. If u are living in USA read the new york times and wall street journal...don't stop with editorials, read anythinh from recipes to art's and living, fashion etc etc...you will be amazed to know how few words who actually know and if you are concerned about talking and expressing yourself verbally to a person then I am the last person to give you advice... but anyway i have no work so I will tell you what has been happening of late.. i have been teaching under grad biology labs for the past 4 years and I always suck at teaching properly ...most of the time I end up speaking fast or too much information its not difficult either to give a lecture or a casual conversation...recently i had to teach a lecture class because my professor was out of town ...i had nightmares about this ...so I prepared myself by speaking infront of a mirror and trying to be casual rather than pedagogic and it worked well.. | ||

CAT, GMAT, word a day-these improve vocab. But if u want to improve your grammar, sentence formation should read a lot. News articles, novels etc. Many people have the habit of thinking in native language n doing a word to word translation into english. Must try to avoid that. | ||

This has to be overcome by taking the initiative...Go out and talk like Mav said ... One of my first college recruit teams in India had major communication problems - I included a weekly presentation/JAM session on general topics - not technical in our schedules. One person would give a talk on topic of his choice for 5 mins and then we'd go around the room continuing the discussion ...6 months of this and the guys showed marked improvement in spoken communication... Conversation needs listening skills too and this kind of discussion helps build those as well... That's the difference between creative conversational writing and "technical" exam answers...that is exactly why DB writing is perfect - it translates very easily to speech ... Anand Garu, Easier said than done andi.. It is my own experience.. I used to write reams and reams of additionals during exams and even as a preparation for it..to the extent that most of my class mates used to carry copies of my hand written notes for preparation for the exam...even during my MBA days.. but when it came to speaking it took me a while before i achieved that level of fluency... I would suggest everyone here to first read Norman Lewis.. | ||

Listening to radio(not TV) and colleagues builds colloquial language skills and recognition of the local idiom... Both these are input functions - putting the words, sentence constructs into your brain... But only when you are able to regurgitate these on demand will your output communication improve Writing in english in DB will force you to retrieve words to express your thoughts - creative writing is an excellent way to improve word retrieval...Once you are able to retrieve words faster , they come into your working vocabulary , and roll of your tongue easier when you speak as well The other major advantage - here you do not have to be overly concerned about making a mistake ... English speaking and writing skills have long been sold as a false identifiers of so called refinedness and its about time that us Indians understand that the world could have cared less about that. IMO, English writing skills and speaking skills are largely overrated.
