Whenever cinema had faced crisis, directors from war ridden European countries came to rescue;first the bolshvik editor/directors--Devzhenko,Eisenstein, Pudovkin and Dziga Vertov, then Nouvelle Vague in the form of Truffaut, Goddard etc, later Bergman and finally Trakovsky, the man who showed the world the margins of visula beauty of cinema... After Tarkovsky, the most creative director the world has seen is Keislowski, though visuals wise not in the same bracket as Tarkovsky, but content wise I don't think there is anyone in the world cinema who can come close to Kieslowski... At the age of 55, he died relatively young but left a legacy in the form of shorts and features...he wrote a book and his daughter later continued to popularise his works...Decalogue is a modern adaptation of biblical 10 commandments, his most famous work, and then there is the triology of 3 colors... I do not know any serious filmmaker who is not a fan of Keislowski... If you look closely, the works of avant-garde directors from countries such as poland, germany, france, italy and England are essentially pieces of argument, questioning the collective morality and individual ethos... The toughest thing for a director to achieve is creating an illusion that there were no people behind the scenes creating the film, but it's a piece of art created from no where...In my opinion, there are only 2 directors so far who achieved this: one is Tarkovsky and the other is Keislowski... Keislowski often repeated the same cast and crew and made the films on small canvas and low budgets with rich fertile material there by giving the audience space to think... There is one short in decalogue that best exemplifies his mark...A small time thief kills a man and steals his money and is brought to trial...Kieslowski asks the question: How is a government or an authority is entitled to bring the wronged to justice by punishing him with a death sentence...the way he shows this argument is amazing...'A short film about love'-another part of decalogue was re made by Shashi Lal Nair into 'Ek choti si love story'... Apart from content, another aspect of his films is visual style; though they are on small canvas, they are exact, sharp, message conveying and above all inimitable and unparallelled...
