A powerful blast rocked Islamabad,the capital of Pakistan on Saturday, leaving at least 40 dead and 75 injured, including foreigners. The blast occurred outside the Marriott hotel. The blast site in Islamabad is near President's house. Initial reports said a suicide bomber rammed his explosive-laden vehicle into the main gate of the hotel. The powerful blast was heard from several kilometres away. The explosion destroyed numerous vehicles parked outside the hotel and uprooted trees. It also sparked a fire in the hotel, which was evacuated. Reports say that there was a big function at Marriott hotel at the time of blasts. American embassy officials were staying at hotel. Balochistan House opposite Marriott also partly destroyed. World Bank delegation was staying at Marriott hotel. The flats behind the Marriott hotel where senior government officials stay has also destroyed. Two-thirds of the 290-room Marriott hotel are on fire. The blasts were heard several kilometres away. Reports say that first an explosive-laden car and then an explosive-laden truck blew up. At least 15 people are reportedly trapped in Marriott hotel fire. Blasts at Marriott hotel driveway has made a 25-feet-deep crater. Danish diplomat, and three US citizens are among the injured. There were reports that Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani was hosting an Iftar dinner at the nearby Prime Minister's Secretariat. The event was attended by President Asif Ali Zardari and Army Chief Ashfaq Parvez Kayani. No one was reportedly hurt within the Prime Minister's Secretariat. |
