I know atleast one, Intel's latest fab will be in China. I do not know of any other American company starting a brand new fab in recent times. | ||

See SemIndia website also, US lo desi consultancy website laaga undi...that Vinod Aggarwal founded a company earlier but its worth only a few million. Bottom line is that only very big players can fund fabs now. All other medium and small and even some very big companies are going fabless. Eg. Qualcomm. PS: By fab I mean a wafer fabrication facility. If they are thinking an assembly facility etc. its a different thing. | ||

AMD's only agreement is that they will help on the technology side...to my knowledge they have no agreements on investing in a Fab, and it cannot. It itself is reeling under loss now. I really wonder from where SEM India is going to invest $2B. It has no big players. That Agarwal guy's company is a few million worth only. I hate to be pessimistic, but its a reality. If the AP govt is really interested they should have talked to big players like Intel. | ||

I have been an engineer in the semiconductor field for the past 3 years. My company has been in end to end semiconductor solutions for more than 40 years. My opinion and one of our fab director's opinion is India lost the opportunity in getting a good manufacturing site already. Setting up a fab is a very very costly affair. Even the very big companies do not do it very often. Intel waited for the Congress Govt at center to announce the Semiconductor policy, and went to China. That was one of the very few companies that can set up a fab. I do not see any companies doing that in the near future, unless its from Taiwan or China. | ||
