The Packers were a one man team for years. Now that he's gone the glory days are over. Rememeber where you heard that from. Viking 31 - Packers 17. |

"Monday Night Football." Season opener. You really don't need to say much more than that. The Vikings' rivalry with the Packers long has been one of the NFL's best for a multitude of reasons. Proximity is of significant import, with Green Bay only a 4 1/2-hour drive from the Twin Cities. There also has been the competitive nature of the 94 meetings between the NFC North foes. The Packers hold a 48-45-1 edge, and since 1998 the Vikings have outscored Green Bay 491-490 in 21 meetings. And then there is the back-and-forth between fan bases that is good-natured at times, downright nasty at others. All of this is reason enough to look forward to tonight's regular-season opener between the teams at Lambeau Field. But it only scratches the surface when it comes to the contempt these organizations feel for each other these days. The interesting part is that feeling isn't one that necessarily exists inside either locker room. Rather, it's the two front offices that have little time for each other. "I grew up a New York Giants fan having the rivalry of Philly, Dallas and Washington," Vikings owner Zygi Wilf said in July. "Those are teams I kind of grew up hating. When I first came here, the Green Bay rivalry was talked about so much, but I couldn't feel it yet. Well, I feel it now." The main reason for this boils down to one word: tampering. The final straw There is little doubt that at the conclusion of tonight's game Vikings coach Brad Childress and Packers coach Mike McCarthy will meet somewhere near midfield and shake hands like mature adults. On a scale of 1 to 10, the level of sincerity in the act will be somewhere around zero. If Childress and McCarthy were ever going to be Facebook buddies, that ended in mid-July when the Packers filed tampering charges with the NFL against the Vikings. |
