HYDERABAD: In a state where rhetoric is the mainstay of politics , one would expect an actor-turned politician like Chiranjeevi do go a few steps further on that path. However, he announced the formation of his new party "Prajarajyam" in the most unconventional way - using powerful symbols. This is unheard of in the political history of the state that has produced great orators who used words like missiles . For the first time, however , Chiranjeevi, undoubtedly a not-so-inspiring speaker, launched his party using symbols to convey his political philosophy . Consider this. Apart from the portraits of Gandhi, Ambedkar, Phule and Mother Teresa, he liberally used quotes from the now forgotten Telugu revolutionary poet Sri Sri to resurrect the idea of 'Samasamajam' - an egalitarian society. The unfurling of the party's flag, that too by an unknown and physically challenged fan too is a power symbol with a message. Chiranjeevi also broke new ground by introducing new symbols like Jyotirao Phule, Mother Teresa in the political discourse of the state. "Speech and words do not convey much. Symbols convey more than a thousand words," pointed out noted political scientist Kancha Ilaiah. Without raising an accusing finger at anyone, Chiranjeevi questioned every premise of the Congress government in the state on burning issues like SEZs, political corruption and backwardness among the people and the development model being pursued by it. The OU professor said using symbols in political movement to convey their objective was not new in the Indian politics . "The Sangh Parivar uses saffron as a symbol of their political ideology while Dalit organisations use the statues of Ambedkar. Similarly, Chiranjeevi , without telling in so many words simply used the portraits of Dr Ambedkar, Phule, Mother Teresa to convey a political message to the rich, Dalits, BCs and minorities ," he said. "In a system where parties are indentified with individuals rather than their ideologies , nothing but the individual leader matters. The leader himself is a declaration of the objective of the party he is forming," Professor K C Suri of the University of Hyderabad said. -TOI http://www.andhrastudio.com/studio.php?id=5613 |
