However, here, in the temple town of Tirupati, he has set out to begin his new epoch in public life. Among a crowd of the strength of almost one million people, Chiranjeevi announced his arrival into politics with the unveiling of his new party, the Praja Rajyam or the People’s rule. Chiranjeevi is followingthe footsteps of several major actors in the film industry. Merely a week after announcing his entry in politics, Chiranjeevi formed his party. During the rally held at the huge 120 acre Avilala tank, he revealed the flag of his party- green and white in colour with the Sun in the centre. Son of a poor constable in a village in Andhra Pradesh’s west Godavri district, Chiranjeevi went to Ongole to complete his graduation in commerce. He used to till on his father’s five acre lands and was aware of the problems of the farmers. In 1977, he headed towards a film institute in Chennai to take up acting as a full-fledged career. In spite of the initial struggles,he did not give up and eventually emerged as the poster boy in Telugufilm industry. It is interesting to note that he had to take negative roles in the films in order to establish himself in the industry. He is revered by his fans. Especially in his home state he has an unmatched fan-following today. Chiranjeevi has not been averse to social work in his glittering film career. He set up the Chiranjeevi Charitable Trust as well as the Chiranjeevi Eye and Blood Banks to cater especially to the poor. His philanthropic work also earned him the Padma Bhushan award. In his speech made at the gathering in Tirupati, Chiranjeevi reflected at the struggles he had to go through in order to be where he is today. With an income of less than Rs.100 per month, he survived in Chennai while learning to act in the film institute. Citing his inspiration to be Mother Teresa, Chiranjeevi went on to add that his mother taught him all about life and he does not believe in any barriers of caste, class, or religion. He also emphasised on the power of the youth and promised to be not just a leader but the servant of the people of Andhra Pradesh. Chiranjeevi has an explosive beginning in the murky world of Indian politics, where images are made or shattered in no time. His foray into politics at this stage shall allow him concentrate on next year’s assembly elections. Film actors getting into politics has almost become a ritual in India, but having the mettle to sustain and go on is a rare achievement. Chiranjeevi would be wishing that he could emulate NT Ramarao, who made a similar entry into the world of actor-turned-politicians. Chiranjeevi’s party has risen the hopes of millions of people in the country as his party agenda focuses on power of the youth and modernization. However, only time can tell whether his innings in politics will be as hit and successful as his innings in the Telugu cine industry or will he silently fade away like many other film-star politicians. |
