HYDERABAD: The massive turnout at film star Chiranjeevi’s public meeting has justified the unprecedented hype and hoopla that heralded the arrival of his ‘Praja Rajyam’ party on the political horizon of Andhra Pradesh. In spite of his power-packed foray and reference to a wide-range of issues in his speech, the star did not produce an iota of evidence to show that his new party will be different from other centrist parties. He uttered the same old homilies to pose himself as a saviour of the farmers, the workers, the poor, an advocate of social justice and equity and believer in secularism. He did not go the distance, say to seek land to the tiller or oppose privatisation of public sector entities. For a novice in politics, he carried it all with a lot of chutzpah. Expectedly, in terms of votes, he would be seeking a slice of the same cake that the Congress and the TDP, considered thus far the principal contenders for power, are sharing. It is now a question as to who, between the two parties, will get hurt by Chiranjeevi’s rather dazzling paradrop into politics. How he would go about it will be awaited with anticipation since Chiranjeevi avoided directly criticising any party though he took a potshot against corruption in major irrigation projects, the Achilles heel of the Congress government. What is, however, apparent is that his game-plan is to bank upon his star appeal with the masses to garner votes just as N. T. Rama Rao did in 1982. The actor cleverly left open-ended his responses to sensitive issues such as categorisation of Scheduled Castes, a bone of contention among the Madigas and Malas, inclusion of Kapus in the list of Backward Classes and left wing extremism beyond saying it was a social and not a law and order problem. To his credit though, he shed light on his views on Telangana at his maiden public appearance by indicating that his party would be flexible on the issue. Crowd mobilisation Chiranjeevi’s public meeting, at a superficial level, may be billed as a success as it showcased his impressive crowd mobilisation skills. But, those not inclined to the filmi stuff, the script of his speech was too cinematic while the countdown before the party’s name and the giant digital screen in the backdrop were akin to functions that marked the release of Chiranjeevi starrers. | ||
