Constituencies have been revamped by the Delimitation Commission in such a way that adjoining Muslim-dominated mandals were merged. While Hyderabad LS seat is on top with 70 per cent Muslim voters, Nandyal in Kurnool district stood second with 17.77 per cent. Rajampet and Kadapa, in the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddyâs native Kadapa district have 15 per cent Muslim voters. The strength of Muslim voters ranges from 10 to 14.94 per cent in Nizama-bad, Kurnool, Chevella, Zaheerabad, Guntur, Adila-bad, Nellore, Narasaraopet, Hindupur, Mahbubnagar and Anantapur LS seats. The commission took the 2001 census as a base while undertaking its delimitation exercise. In that exercise, the census also took into account religious affiliations and this came of help to the delimitation commission. There are even mandal-wise statistics of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes voters, Muslims, Christians, Buddists and Jains. The Assembly constituencies also saw a major change with Muslims becoming a dominant force in more than 40 of them, where they constitute more than 15 per cent of voters. In Hyderabad district, Malakpet, Karwan, Gosha-mahal, Charminar, Chand-rayangutta, Yakutpura, Bahadurpura and Nampally Assembly segments have 30 to 90 per cent Muslim population. Same is the case ins Guntur-West and Vijaya-wada-East constituencies. Nellore, Kadapa, Zahee-rabad, Rajendranagar, Nan-dyal, Bodhan and Rayachoti have more than 25 per cent Muslim electorate. âThough Muslims are in majority in many places, some of these seats are reserved for candidates from the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes,â said Inaganti Ravi of I-DAP, the data analysis group which was involved in the delimitation process. | ||

The delimitation process has made Muslims a dominant force in 15 Lok Sabha seats of the state and a deciding factor in 40 Assembly constituencies. In the redrawn electoral map of the state, Muslims along with Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes will decide winners in 107 out of 294 Assembly seats and 22 out of 42 Lok Sabha constituences. |
