This is a recent observation by Iravatham Mahadevan, an authority on Indus Valley civilization, that there was a definite link between ancient Andhra and Harappa civilizations. Mr. Mahadevan, a retired IAS officer, presented a paper on “Dravidian roots in Indus Civilization†at a conference held recently at Kuppam in connection with the 10th convocation of Dravidian University. He reasoned that the “andru†in Andhra sound, had Dravidian roots. According to press note issued by the commission here on Thursday, he contended that though the Indus Valley script had not been fully deciphered in spite of continuous research, Dravidian roots were quite visible in the Indus Valley script. The conference was chaired by the university Vice-Chancellor G. Lakshminarayana and attended by the commission chairman A. B. K. Prasad. Mr. Mahadevan said there was tremendous influence of Dravidian roots on all Indo-Aryan languages, especially those spoken in northern India. He demonstrated 400 to 450 symbols of Indus Valley script found on jars, terracotta and arrows etc. He said the word “ambu†carried the same meaning (arrow) in Telugu, Kannada and Tamil. Serving as base He concluded that the Dravidian languages served Indus Valley language as the base. | ||

Politicians of the two states are putting pressure on culture ministry for a favourable decision before the next general election. While the ministry has no view on the matter, even the PM’s office has refused to get involved in the issue. Asked for guidance by culture ministry, PMO said the view of the experts group would be final. But Congress leaders of both states are not in a mood for academic debate. Andhra Pradesh CM Y S R Reddy and Karnataka Congress leader S Siddharamaiah have met culture minister Ambika Soni seeking early redressal to their demand. Soni, sources said, was in favour of unanimity. But if the last meeting of the expert group is anything to go by, unanimity is a long way off. In the June meeting, V C Kalandai Swamy, a member of the committee, strongly argued that both languages did not fulfil the criterion of antiquity set by the government. Both languages had failed on other criteria also. These included: having a body of ancient literature which was considered a valuable heritage, an original literary tradition which was not borrowed from another speech community and the presence of a classical language and literature distinct from its modern form. Various arguments against Kannada being granted classical status were given. Prominent among these were that the first extant work in Kannada — Kvirajamarga written in 900 AD — was a broad rendering of Thandi’s well-known work on poetics called Kavyadhara. Though Kannada as a language of poetic composition did exist even prior to 850 AD, literature produced between 450 AD and 850 AD has not yet come to light. Pampa, the great poet of Kannada, wrote Vikramarjuna Vijayam which is again not an original work. Another argument against Kannada is that a language does not gain classical status on the basis of a government order or even on the basis of the view of a committee, but on its own. It depends on the recognition of scholars. The case against Telugu is similar. Nannaya’s Mahabharata, though held in high esteem, is not usually read in whole. Nannaya lived and wrote during the reign of Rajraja Narenda, a Chalukya king, which means that his period was 11th century and Nannaya’s Mahabharata is derived from Vyasa’s Mahabharata in Sanskrit. |
