Mvssr75:
Indian Railways has ignored most of the recommendations made by the Commissioner of Railway Safety as well as various committees on adequate safety precautions in trains. Despite umpteen suggestions, there are still no fire extinguishers in bogies, no way to access water and no first aid boxes. Experts say the crew in trains is also not trained to take up rescue operations during disasters. Following several fire mishaps in trains, the Commissioner of Railway Safety had asked railways not to use aluminum near doorways and toilets. This suggestion was ignored. After the Attari fire mishap in 2007, the commissioner recommended that more emergency exits be made and the vestibules be kept open to enable people to escape during fires. These too were not followed through. Further, it was suggested that the Pantograph, a device that gathers electric current from overhead lines be insulated properly. The commissioner further cautioned railways not to use rexin and foam to furnish coaches, since they give out toxic, dense smoke on burning. Trains should also have smoke detectors and alarms and should come to a stop as soon as there is a sign of fire, the commissioner had recommended. A railway safety review committee headed by Justice H.R. Khanna as well as a parliamentary committee headed by Mr K. Yerrannaidu had also made several recommendations, all of which were ignored. Police probe into cases of suspected sabotages have also been lackadaisical and culprits have not been nailed. |
