http://www.outlookindia.com/article.aspx?230788 the foolishness of running away from one's heritage. >> Some Like It Hindu Indian Muslims must reflect on another reality. Of the 1 lakh professionals recruited by the Saudi state, there is not only no prejudice against Hindus but they are preferred. They are better qualified as doctors, engineers, technicians. It ultimately boils down to the premium Hindu society places on education, something Muslims must catch up with if they are not to fall by the wayside. There are other reasons why Indians, including Indian Muslims, are preferred over their Pakistani counterparts. Right through the ’80s and ’90s, Afghanistan and Pakistan have been touched by political Islam the Saudi state wishes to steer clear of. Also, those from Muslim-majority countries, when they arrive in the land of Mecca and Medina, subconsciously see themselves as part of the Muslim umma to the point that they require a firmer hand to be brought into the Saudi state’s discipline. The Indian Muslim, by contrast, is a creature of composite culture, trained to live with a variety of people. A Saudi employer gave an extraordinary reason for his preference for Hindus. "They don’t take breaks for namaz and are therefore more productive." balupu s/o gelupu |
