If my memory is right, On the same day (Last day), India's Vijay Amritraj was fighting with Argentina's Martin jaite in the 5th game, in the Davis cup semi finals in Bangalore. What a day for indian sports fan. While India lost the test (while Gavaskar's catch is controversial, the ball hit his arm pad, was out for 96, i guess), Vijay Amritraj won the 5th game to take India into Davis cup finals. At one stage, Amritraj was lagging behing in third set at 4-5, after losing first two sets. I agree that Richards,Sachin,Lara are great to watch.....but only when score big..... Runs are so important in a test match and i rate players for the contribution they make to their team's sucess...... yes gifted players are a reat to watch.....but thier supply is limited..... guys like Steve waugh,Arivinda....who grind it out and take the fight back to the oppositon need to be rated more.....i put Gavaskar and Ponting as well in that bracket.....Inzi.....Thorpe...Miandad....all fall in that category.... no disrepect to the great guys named here...but the guys who fight it out in the middle make the test matches more interesting than guys who single handedly dominate other teams..... may be i'm talking in a TV viewer perspective.... | ||

tamudu bowlers like Murali/Warne/Kumble set the benchmark for a while, audukune people tend to compare how batsman performed againt them. There might be occasions where other spinners have bowled beautifully like Daniel Vettori bolwed in a series in India. I would have really liked to see warne bowl against sachin and laxman after he returned to cricket from the ban he completely changed his style by then I believe he could have given a tough fight to them.......... definitely warne is the greatest spinner ever....re invented the lost art of leg spin and bought a re recongnition to it..... | ||

donno dude.. among all his colleagues Lara is gifted with the best hand eye co ordination he reads the ball so well...even before its delivered he knew where its going to be and how its going to turn..... the best example is 2001 srilanka series... just look at the way he dominated the best spinner from sub continent muralitharan over a perios of months muralitharan declared lara is the best batsman he ever bowled to.... regarding why he fails against india I donno....he is very unpredictable | ||

i am not sure you can call lara the best player against spin.....traditionally indian spinners have struggled against left handers eg grant flower,hayden,jayasurya.....kani lara seems to be an exception...his career avg against spinners is arnd 54 and against india is 38 something.... in the recent times in my opinion players ability to play spin shud be judged by playing subcontinent spinners in subcontinent conditions.... | ||

hemti.... for me the one is chennai 2001 test....dhummu lepaaru manollu....it was nail biting...change of fortunes masthu undey aa test lo....with india winning finally The second one is 1999 WI vs Australia test in bridgetown..... One of the best batting performances U have seen in modern cricket by none other than Brian Lara....I watched it live.... THere was some history to that series....Lara under his captaincy just went through a 5-0 white wash in south africa....And comeing back to west indeis he had to take Aussies on 4 test series....and in the first one in one of the innings westindies were all out for less than 100.... THere was severe uprorar against the team.....and the board director publicly vents his anger and frustration on the team and the captain.... In the second teat Lara raises like a phoenix and scores a double century and WI wins the test... its 1-1 and they go to this eventful test in brisgetown.... Aussies bat first scores 490 and WI replies with 329...In the 2nd innings Auz score a meek 149 and westindies had to chase 311... And what a chase its going to be......Oneof the best batting beformances U can lay ur eyes on..... THe pitch is completely deteriorated....with cracks everywhere Mc Grath ,Gillespie in full flow....gillespie the most dangerous and underrated bowler from AUs swinging the ball like a snake... Mc GRath consistently hitting those cracks and absoluttely making it unplayable for the batsman... The spin is supported warne and mc guill... Four world class bowlers bowling in tandem.... WHen Lara comes to creese the score was 80/4 or something like dat...still a kool 240 odd to chase.... He takes his time to score the first few runs.... Then when he realizes heis running out of partners he just unleashes his magic which is why he hailed as the greatest batsman ever.... He picks warne as his bunny.....constantly putting him out of boundary....he absolutely humiliated him,,,,made him look like a practice bowler... THe result...FOr the first time in his career Warne was dropped for the 4th test from the squad... By the time the score reaches 240 WI loses 8 wkts.... The NExt 80 runs were scored with the partnerships from Ambrose and the worst batsman in the world Courtney Walsh.... The tension was unbelievable...The crowd was rocking.... The pitch was hopeless...The tempers were raising on the ground.... Lara gets beaten...Falls .....misses the edges.....but then he pulls himself together.... And he ends the match with a Glorious COver Drive bringig the whole crowD to its feet.... In the second innings from both teams no one crosses 50.... Only Lara stays unbeaten on 153 HAIL THE KING |
