Yes Dhoni is a great player and most likely the greatest captain India has ever had. I think he is the greatest captain across all formats, right now.

However, Tendulkar and Richards are definitely superior batsmen when compared to MSD. It is definitely true in Tests - which the T-20 generation may not acknowledge but takes greater skill to score runs than T-20. I can think of atleast 15-20 test knocks of Tendulkar alone which are superior to MSD's greatest ODI knocks.

Now, to satisfy T-20 generation/fans, looking purely at ODIs, SRT/Richards dominated their generations/peers much more than MSD does his. Even the blindest Dhoni fans and hardcore SRT/Richards haters will have to accept this is a 3-way tie at best.

SRT has 18000 + runs, 62 MOM awards and so on - we all know the numbers. I cannot see how MSD's stats can even compare to this. Richards, well - if you have not seen him bat, please go check the youtube videos. Richards is beyond numbers [even though he has excellent stats like SRT and MSD], if you seen Richards massacre bowling attacks -[thank you star sports/espn for all those wonderful videos] you will not claim MSD is greater than him so unabashaedly.

Bottomline: Let us not lose persepective. MSD is an excellent ODI batsman, but it would be very ignorant to claim he is obviously/clearly the greatest because you are being swept off by the euphoria of his latest knock or recent form. For the record, there were a lot of people who demean MSD and have insulted him during the 7-0 run against england/aus and the series loss to england in India. They would be wrong too.

vs West Indies, Gros Islet, July 3, 2009

India had the game in their control, but a flurry of wickets left them requiring 34 in four overs. It came down to the last over, with India needing 11.

Dhoni held fort despite wickets falling regularly from the other end. It was any body's game, but he swiped the second ball from pacer Jerome Taylor over the midwicket boundary to seal the match.

He and Yusuf Pathan got the remaining four runs with a ball to spare.

vs Australia, Adelaide, February 12, 2012

In fact, during the Batting Powerplay, he consumed 13 dot balls and looked out of place.

India needed 73 runs off the last 10 overs, and 40 in the last five. In the penultimate over, only four runs came and India lost the important wicket of Ravindra Jadeja.

13 runs were needed off the last over and it seemed Dhoni had delayed things far too long.

Only one run came off Clint McKay's first two balls. With 12 needed off last four balls and the game slipping away from India's grasp, Dhoni picked a length delivery from outside off and dispatched it over long-on for a massive six. It was a remarkable hit under the circumstances.

True, may be that is why, Dhoni is not bothered to keep 15 runs for the last over, else last over ki 8 to 10 runs migilichey vaademo.
Malinga 10 overs 58 runs 1 wkt
Eranga 9 overs 34 runs 2 wkts, before that final over. May be that is why, Lankan captain kept him for last over

For the record, Dhoni is the only batsman to have an average of 100-plus in successful chases in ODIs. He has accumulated 2,102 runs at an average of 100.09 in 72 matches, including two hundreds and 14 fifties. With such fabulous records, we take a look at Dhoni's five best finishes in ODIs.

91 not out in ICC World Cup final against Sri Lanka: Dhoni's innings of 91 not out would rank top as it won India the most cherished title. Till the final, Dhoni had not done much with the bat and his decision to come ahead of in-form batsman Yuvraj Singh surprised many. His reasoning was that he's the right man to face Muttiah Muralitharan, whom he had played with in the Chennai Super Kings team in IPL. Dhoni, first resurrected the innings with Gambhir who scored a brilliant 97, and then in the company of Yuvi saw India through the finishing line. Dhoni's penchant to hit sixes to overhaul the target came to the fore when he smashed Kulasekara for a overboundary to win the World Cup for India.

183 not out vs Sri Lanka at Jaipur on October 31, 2005: This innings was the turnaround for Dhoni who went on to establish himself as a hard-hitting wicketkeeper batsman in ODIs. Team India was set a target of 299, considered huge during those times, but Dhoni made a mockery of it by launching into the Sri Lanka attack, hitting them for 10 sixes and 15 fours. The impact of the innings was such that that Virender Sehwag, known for his hard hitting, was the second highest top scorer with just 39 runs.

44 not out vs Australia in Adelaide on February 12, 2012: India had a forgettable Test series, getting whitewashed 0-4 by Australians, but being ODI champions, they were expected to do well in the CB series. But India's poor run followed them in the tri-series as well. In a league match against Australia, India were set a target of 270 and were in a spot of bother when it lost its top orders with plenty more to chase, while Dhoni, like in the Test series, struggled to get going. However, Dhoni continued to hang on and in the company of Ravindra Jadeja brought India close before the southpaw was dismissed in the penultimate over. With 13 runs needed off the last over, it all depended on Dhoni to get the team through. The equation boiled down to 12 runs off four balls. Dhoni launched himself into Clint McKay for a huge six and a three off the next waist-length full toss no ball. India knocked off the required three runs to get India through.

72 not out vs Pakistan in Lahore on February 13, 2006: Dhoni was slowly creating a reputation of being the best finishers in the game. Asked to chase 289 to win the match, India started poorly losing its top orders early. However, in the company of Yuvraj Singh, Dhoni got the team to safety, scoring an unbeaten 72 off just 46 balls with 13 fours. Dhoni did the bulk of the scoring in that partnership with Yuvi, with 73 percent of the runs coming off his bat, easily overshadowing his senior partner.

46 not out vs West Indies in Gros Islet on July 3, 2009: The main strategy of Dhoni's batting in run chases is to preserve his wicket till the last over and even if the asking rate is highly improbable to achieve, he can make it possible with his lusty hitting. He proved it right in this match against West Indies. In a rain-curtailed match, India were left chasing 159 in 22 overs and was cruising to win until a flurry of wickets put the pressure back on Indians. But the captain cool wasn't to be left flustered even when the asking rate climbed to 10. Needing 11 of the last over, he smashed the second ball from pacer Jerome Taylor over the midwicket boundary and in the company of Yusuf Pathan completed the formalities with a ball to spare.

Dhoni smashed an unbeaten 183 in just 145 balls batting at no. 3, his highest ODI score to date, with an incredible tally of 10 sixes and 15 fours. It was the Lankans who had to bear the brunt of his blade that time too.

Thanks to that fabulous innings, India chased down a stiff target of 299 set up by Lanka with almost four overs to spare.

Dhoni also did the finisher's job in sublime fashion in Pakistan - at Lahore and Karachi - in 2006 with unbeaten 70-plus knocks that became key elements in India's 4-1 victory in the ODI series after the 0-1 loss in the preceding Test series.

He has done it in Bangladesh in May, 2007 and then in January, 2010 with innings of 91 not out and 101 not out respectively.

The most talked about and important among these back-to-the-wall knocks is the 91 not out he made in the April 2, 2011 World Cup final against sub continent rivals Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium final here.

I have a strong feeling, Dhoni will call quits while he is rolling high. That's how you carry your legacy.

I guess yes in some way. next WC ki retire avuthadu international cricket nunchi but not IPL. IPL give more money so he can maintain same kid of earnings. Money vadulukovali antee aa sacrifice vere vuntundhi. infact taniki antha avasaram kudaa ledhu.

Fixing ganaka jarakakundaa dhoni inni wonder chesi vuntee no doubt he is the latest numero one in india cricket. Michale bewan so far good finisher ani feel ayee vadini. Bewan kanna enthoo great. Constent gaa Srilanka ni inthalaa tokkina player chudaledhu. SL meedha sub continent pitches meedha iragessadu, over seas pitches meedha iragesadu. I think oka 4-5 years gaa SL ki cups lekundaa chesthunnadu. Opponent SL antee last over dhakaa relax ayinaa parvaledhu annatu free gaa aduthunnadu and he is getting success also.

http://sports.ndtv.com/cricket/news/210722-no-one-knows-the- real-mahendra-singh-dhoni-says-sunny-gavaskar

"MS Dhoni was not even supposed to be fit for the final. There is no cricketer who has got India back from impossible situations so many times," wrote Gavaskar in his newspaper column on Saturday.

Gavaskar says it is impossible to understand the real Dhoni. "Perhaps even his closest buddies don't know him as well as they think they do," said Gavaskar, who then goes on to pay a rare tribute to a professional sportsperson. "If tomorrow he has to say goodbye to all the trappings of fame, Dhoni will calmly get on his motorbike and go away. He is that rarity who treats both those impostors - wins and losses - in the same way. He simply plays the game," wrote Gavaskar.
