Yes Dhoni is a great player and most likely the greatest captain India has ever had. I think he is the greatest captain across all formats, right now. However, Tendulkar and Richards are definitely superior batsmen when compared to MSD. It is definitely true in Tests - which the T-20 generation may not acknowledge but takes greater skill to score runs than T-20. I can think of atleast 15-20 test knocks of Tendulkar alone which are superior to MSD's greatest ODI knocks. Now, to satisfy T-20 generation/fans, looking purely at ODIs, SRT/Richards dominated their generations/peers much more than MSD does his. Even the blindest Dhoni fans and hardcore SRT/Richards haters will have to accept this is a 3-way tie at best. SRT has 18000 + runs, 62 MOM awards and so on - we all know the numbers. I cannot see how MSD's stats can even compare to this. Richards, well - if you have not seen him bat, please go check the youtube videos. Richards is beyond numbers [even though he has excellent stats like SRT and MSD], if you seen Richards massacre bowling attacks -[thank you star sports/espn for all those wonderful videos] you will not claim MSD is greater than him so unabashaedly. Bottomline: Let us not lose persepective. MSD is an excellent ODI batsman, but it would be very ignorant to claim he is obviously/clearly the greatest because you are being swept off by the euphoria of his latest knock or recent form. For the record, there were a lot of people who demean MSD and have insulted him during the 7-0 run against england/aus and the series loss to england in India. They would be wrong too. | ||

For the record, Dhoni is the only batsman to have an average of 100-plus in successful chases in ODIs. He has accumulated 2,102 runs at an average of 100.09 in 72 matches, including two hundreds and 14 fifties. With such fabulous records, we take a look at Dhoni's five best finishes in ODIs. 91 not out in ICC World Cup final against Sri Lanka: Dhoni's innings of 91 not out would rank top as it won India the most cherished title. Till the final, Dhoni had not done much with the bat and his decision to come ahead of in-form batsman Yuvraj Singh surprised many. His reasoning was that he's the right man to face Muttiah Muralitharan, whom he had played with in the Chennai Super Kings team in IPL. Dhoni, first resurrected the innings with Gambhir who scored a brilliant 97, and then in the company of Yuvi saw India through the finishing line. The impact of the innings was such that that Virender Sehwag, known for his hard hitting, was the second highest top scorer with just 39 runs. 44 not out vs Australia in Adelaide on February 12, 2012: India had a forgettable Test series, getting whitewashed 0-4 by Australians, but being ODI champions, they were expected to do well in the CB series. But India's poor run followed them in the tri-series as well. In a league match against Australia, India were set a target of 270 and were in a spot of bother when it lost its top orders with plenty more to chase, while Dhoni, like in the Test series, struggled to get going. However, Dhoni continued to hang on and in the company of Ravindra Jadeja brought India close before the southpaw was dismissed in the penultimate over. With 13 runs needed off the last over, it all depended on Dhoni to get the team through. The equation boiled down to 12 runs off four balls. Dhoni smashed an unbeaten 183 in just 145 balls batting at no. 3, his highest ODI score to date, with an incredible tally of 10 sixes and 15 fours. It was the Lankans who had to bear the brunt of his blade that time too. Thanks to that fabulous innings, India chased down a stiff target of 299 set up by Lanka with almost four overs to spare.
