I think the word racist is being used very generally here. Indian discrimination is a little different. More than 75% of Indians, have the same genetic makeup, so racism doesn't play a part. This includes Srilankans and Bangladeshis. The setup of casteism is not exactly racist, it's discrimination based on occupation. A couple of hundred years ago, Europe was full of white slaves based on occupation. This is not racism. Indians are the most divided society in the world would be a better way to put it. Indians definitely prefer fairer skins, but they also discriminate based on so many things, caste, town, religion(Saiv/Vaish), language. Indians feel inferior to Caucasian(White?) and superior to Blacks, even when they most certainly look pretty close to Africans(skin color, not genes) themselves(Sunil, Dharmavarapu Subramanyam, Brahmanandam, etc. It has a lot more to do with the society expecting superiority at every point and listing out what is superior. A while back, some Tam Brahm had written an article claiming linkage to Jews, as both communities are academically superior. Reality is that Europeans(White/French/Dutch/etc) ruled the world and everyone else in it. So there is a natural attraction towards the winner. | ||

Totally agree that Dalits have faced the worst of discrimination. But I doubt the number given in the article, specially since it has come from the dubious HRW. Also, I believe, things have changed to a very large extent, in the case of Dalit rights, which is welcome. Today, there are places where, a lot of others belonging to castes (be it numerically weaker FCs or numerically stronger OBCs) who are afraid to take on Dalits and be jailed for frivolous reasons! We need to relook the definition of "racism" .. since its being used with every sort of preference these days .. a preference to have a neighbor/tenant of the same community/or other parameter (like sex/age/sexual orientation/color/caste/creed/religion) does not involve "violence" (when limited to denying of an opportunity to rent/sell etc) .. so what exactly is the point in comparing India with say Pekistan or Eraq and judging them as same?
