Bogus voters thrive in polls DC | 29th Dec 2012 Anantapur: The enrollment of bogus voters, for the upcoming co-operative society elections, has become an irritant with the officials in the areas of Rayalaseema district. Ever since the enrollment process started the three main parties in the fray -Congress, Telugu Desam and YSR Congress have been seriously forcing enrollment of new voters following a triangular fight for the first time in the State. In addition, the amendment of rules opened gates for irregularities, as large number of voters enrolled, by producing tampered pattadar passbooks and fake certificates as leased farmers. Interestingly, Kadapa district is dominated by the cadres of YSR Congress party, in most of the co-operative society elections, with Congress and Telugu Desam party lagging behind. There are 70 PACS (Primary Agricultural Co-operative Societies) in Kadapa district where Congress was reportedly struggling for existence against YSR Congress party. While the last co-operative elections saw 3.30 lakh voters, it has reached 4.40 lakh voters this year, after the fresh enrollment in Kadapa district. The Congress and Telugu Desam parties blamed YSR Congress for forcing bogus enrollment of voters in most parts of the district. Anil Kumar, the Collector of Kadapa, has ordered to weed out the names of bogus voters enrolled. The number of voters in 98 societies is 2.9 lakh for the upcoming elections, while previously it was 1.68 lakh in the last society elections. In Anantapur, nearly 1.47 lakh new voters enrolled, for the upcoming elections, making the total 2.20 lakh. It is learnt that many traders who had no way experience in farming and without agriculture lands have enrolled as voters.The tension appears in sensitive villages where the three parties are trying to gain a foothold in the coming Assembly polls. YSR Congress had reportedly enrolled its followers in Rayadurg, Rapthadu and Kadiri while Congress increased number of voters in Kalyandrug, Penukonda and Madakasira Assembly segments. He said around one lakh duplicate voters were noticed in the district and out of them 50, 000 were found in Kadapa Municipal Corporation itself. Need not to say it is the home constituency for Jagan Mohan Reddy, where he won with huge majority during the bye-polls held in the last year. However, one can’t assume that it is confined to only Kadapa and rest of the constituencies are free from bogus and duplicate voters. If, the EC conducts an in-depth inquiry, it may found lakhs of such duplicate voters across the country. Hence, it is time for EC to wake-up and clean-up the mess before the next general elections to ensure fair elections.
