Sub-inspector Gorantla Madhav is a soft-spoken youngster aged around 31 years. But his tough handling of extortionists earned him the love and respect of the people. “I often received threatening calls from extortionists who demanded money. But after Mr G. Madhav took over as the SI of Dharmavaram there has been a considerable decline in extortions,” Aswathappa, a silk trader told this correspondent. The SI’s popularity soared when he had beaten-up several prominent rowdies like K. Sudhakar Reddy, Ravindra Reddy, Pakkira Reddy, Shivanna, Venkatappa, Madhava and Peeran who extorted money from rich businessmen. “The treatment was harsh and the police manual does not permit an officer to act in such a manner, but the rowdies deserved it,” added Aswathappa. “The treatment meted out to the rowdy elements had a sobering effect on them. The extortionists would not resort to the crime again at least till Mr Madhav was in Dharmavaram,” Mr Anjaneyulu, another trader said. The SI enjoys the image of a poor man’s cop, as he was instrumental in controlling matka gambling and weaning autowallahs away from booze. “He would hold street corner meetings every evening to tell autowallahs to refrain from drinking and matka gambling. Many of us are refraining from drinking and gambling at least due to the fear of the police,” G. Khader Basha an auto-driver from Dharmavaram said. A native of Pasupala Rudravaram village in Kurnool district, Madhav belongs to a poor shepherd’s family. Sources close to him revealed that the SI was the first in his family to complete his education and earn a degree. “I have seen injustice against the poor since my childhood. The rich subjected me to harassment too. As a poor man my orientation is always for the good of fellow poor men,” the SI said on the condition that the matter be published only after taking permission from his higher authorities. The SI had joined police service in the year 1998 and is seen as one of the best officers in the region. Before being posted to Dharmavaram, the most volatile town in the region, Madhav had worked at Jammalamadugu, Rajampet and Kadapa number II police station. The popularity of the SI could be gauged from the fact that everyone including the autowallahs had staged protests when his transfer was ordered. Acting on the pressure built-up by the public the authorities had to retain him in Dharmavaram.
