Six pilgrims from Andhra Pradesh were among those killed in the floods in Uttarakhand while relatives of hundreds of others are anxiously waiting to hear from their near and dear ones.

Five members of a family from Visakhapatnam district were killed in the floods, according to information reaching their relatives. They were among a group of 15 persons who had gone on Char Dham Yatra earlier this month.

Narayana Rao (36), K. Adilakshmi (70), Seeta Ramaswamy (50), Rama Rao (46) and Shyamprasad (46) were reported dead. Three others from the same group were also missing. One of the members of the group Thursday informed their relatives over phone about the tragedy. The group was caught in floods at Rampur checkpost near Kedarnath while returning from the pilgrimage.

A man from Anantapur district was also killed in the floods. J. Veerabhadraiah (21) was in another group of pilgrims stranded on the hills near Kedarnath.

As many 2,800 pilgrims from the southern state are stranded in the floods. Relatives of 25 pilgrims from Kushaiguda in Hyderabad were anxiously waiting to hear about their near and dear ones. They have not heard anything since Saturday when the group was caught in floods while returning from Kedarnath.

Relatives of hundreds of others from Srikakulam, Visakhapatnam, East Godavari, West Godavari, Karimnagar, Khammam, Warangal, Kurnool and other districts are also anxious to know about their welfare.

The state government officials said they were in constant touch with Uttarakhand authorities to gather information about the pilgrims from the state and were making all steps for their safe return.

Uttarakhand floods: MP sends special team to rescue pilgrims
Press Trust of India | 20 Jun 2013 03:22 pm
A seven-member special team from Madhya Pradesh on Thursday reached Dehradun to coordinate with Uttarakhand officials for relief and rescue operation for nearly 3,000 pilgrims of this state stranded in the rain ravaged hill state.
The decision to dispatch the special team, led by public relations minister Laxmikant Sharma, was taken by state Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan yesterday after visiting Haridwar and having a word with his Uttarakhand counterpart Vijay Bahuguna, official sources said. The team comprising officials and doctors will set up a control room for people from MP at Haridwar and extend all possible assistance to them for retuning home.
After reviewing updated information from Uttarakhand at the emergency meeting called by Chouhan, the government decided to send the special team. Expressing solidarity with affected people, Chouhan said the state government will extend every possible cooperation at this hour of crisis.
He appealed to the relatives of devotees who have gone to Uttarakhand to be patient while assuring that they will leave no stone unturned in bringing back the pilgrims safely. He also directed to consider possibility of deploying private helicopters, if required.
Madhya Pradesh team will remain in touch with local administration and disaster management teams. Chouhan directed to set up temporary camps for affected persons of the state at Gayatri Peeth, Patanjali Peeth and other places, sources said.
The CM also held discussions with Pranav Pandya of Gayatri Peeth and Baba Ramdev of Patanjali Peeth and urged them to extend every possible assistance to affected persons.
The special team sent from MP comprises senior IAS officer Sanjay Goyal (mob no. 0719007400), senior IPS official Pramod Verma (mob no. 09752271777), Umashankar Bhargava (09425168757), tahsildar Chandrashekhar Shrivastava (09425493131), company commander Ranjit Rathore and personal assistant to public relations minister Dighendra Bhargava (09425026197), sources said, adding that affected persons can contact these officials for immediate help.

At least 500 roads, 170 bridges, hundreds of houses wiped out

quote:

It was a "tsunami" from the sky as trillions of litres of rainwater ate up vast chunks of Uttarakhand — mainly in Rudraprayag and Chamoli districts — devastating it completely, leaving thousands stranded and many more missing. While the official toll was 102, it was nowhere near reality but proper quantification could not be made due to lack of access to remote areas.

Officials said the 116 km of areas between Rudraprayag and Kedarnath was the worst affected by landslides. The main damage was caused by 8-10 feet high floods from Gandhi Sarovar (3 km from Kedarnath, at a higher altitude) at Chaurabari Glacier as it charged down at Rambara (a hamlet, 7 km before Kedarnath), destroying houses and other buildings, vehicles and shops along the road and leaving a large volume of silt.

"The Kedarnath town has been reduced to debris. Though relief and rescue work is on in full swing, it will take one year to restart the Char Dham Yatra," state Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna said. Officials said that during an aerial survey on Wednesday morning, the houses and other buildings in the area could not even be seen. "It is feared that most of the houses were destroyed, as the area remains completely inundated," an official said. The CM claimed that at least 500 roads and over 170 bridges were completely wiped out by the landslides, making rescue operations there nearly impossible by road.

Roshan Trivedi, one of the priests of Kedarnath Temple, rescued by helicopter from the valley to Rishikesh, told reporters he has never witnessed such devastation in the 16 years he has been worshipping there. "I can't say anything except that there were thousands of people that day when Gandhi Sarovar lake burst from its seams and everything from people to houses got washed away."

THOUSANDS FEARED DEAD IN U'KHAND, RESCUE EFFORTS INTENSIFIED

quote:

Amid fears of thousands left dead in rain-ravaged Uttarakhand, relief and rescue operations were intensified today with eight additional IAF choppers pressed into service to evacuate stranded people in Kedarnath which has suffered massive damage in flash floods and cloudbursts.

The State Disaster Mitigation and Management Centre has said that casualties in the affected areas may run into thousands with about 90 'dharamashalas' (rest houses for pilgrims) swept away in the flash floods.

However, the toll has been kept officially at 150.

So far, over 15,000 people stranded in Kedarnath and Govindghat on way to Hemkund Sahib have been evacuated to Joshimath relief camps through air and road routes, IG police R S Meena told PTI.

Authorities are focusing on rescuing more stranded people in worst-hit areas. "Apart from the 12 helicopters already engaged in rescue operations in affected areas, eight more have been roped in for the purpose to step up the process," Meena said.

Rescue efforts are being concentrated as of now on Kedarnath shrine and its adjoining areas in Rudraprayag district which has been the worst hit with about 90 dharamshalas in the temple area, where pilgrims were staying. having been swept away by the flood waters, he said.

Two helicopters have flown from Dehradun to evacuate stranded people.

The Army has also deployed its mountain rescue teams to evacuate the pilgrims. A large number of places are still inaccessible due to heavy flooding in Rudraprayag, Chamoli and Uttarkashi districts and it is impossible to ascertain the extent of damage caused by the calamity, the IG said.

Scores of villages remain under water and cannot be tracked.

Hence there is uncertainty about the casualties caused, he said, adding the devastation is massive.
