In effect, the state would be spending about Rs 2.1 lakh towards the total education and marriage expenses of a girl. State government officials said such a scheme does not exist anywhere else in the country. The scheme will be applicable to two girl children of each family of white ration card holders. The benefits under this scheme will be provided irrespective of them being beneficiaries of the other schemes being implemented for the welfare of the girl child in the state. The objective of the scheme is to ensure that every girl child born in the families of white card holders should become a graduate so that they can become a teacher or bank employee or even join the civil services. The government will come up with a legislation to give statutory status to the scheme soon. Interestingly, three days before Kiran Kumar Reddy announced his 'Bangaru Thalli' scheme, TDP's Chandrababu Naidu also announced, as part of his woman declaration, that if the TDP comes back to power, his government would deposit Rs 25,000 for every girl child at the time of birth which would fetch her Rs 2 lakh by the time she grows up. As per the details of the scheme that was announced by Kiran Kumar Reddy during his Medak tour on Monday, the state government would take care of the education as well as marriage expenses of girls. As per the 'Bangaru Thalli' scheme, the state will give Rs 1,000 per month to the woman from the time she conceives till the time of her child's birth. And if a girl child is born, the mother would be given Rs 2,500 at the time of delivery. From then on till the girl attains the age of five, Rs 1,500 would be given each year to the family towards the girl's expenses. At the time of admission to school, the family would be paid Rs 1,000 and Rs 2,000 every year for her studies from Class I to V. She will be paid Rs 2,500 each for the VI to the VIII standard and Rs 3,000 each for Class IX and X. For Intermediate, the girl will be paid Rs 3,500 per year and Rs 4,000 for each of the three years of graduation.
