The sudden activity in the Telangana Congress camp led by panchayat raj minister K Jana Reddy, holding a series of meetings to decide the strategy on Telangana statehood issue, is said to have the blessings of the Congress high command. Sources in the Congress party said Jana Reddy, who had a few meetings with top leaders of the high command in New Delhi recently, is understood to have got the instructions from the high command to step up activity on the Telangana issue in the wake of reports that the Congress was taking a beating at the ground level from the Telangana Rashtra Samithi and also the Bharatiya Janata Party. The defection of two MPs – G Vivekananda and Manda Jagannatham, along with senior Telangana leader K Kesava Rao into the TRS has given the impression among the people that the Congress would not grant Telangana state. The recent Chalo Assembly programme has further alienated the party from the Telangana people, the high command realised. Under these circumstances, the high command is said to have told Jana Reddy and his group to revive their pro-Telangana activity to convey a message to the people that the Centre would soon take a decision on Telangana and that the Telangana state formation is not possible by the TRS and the Congress. It also instructed chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy, who had used massive police forces to crush the recent Chalo Assembly rally, to extend all possible assistance to the proposed public meeting of Telangana Congress leaders to be held at Nizam College grounds on June 30. But unless the Centre takes a positive decision on Telangana, any number of such meetings would not help the Congress party to get back its glory in the region.
