The Congress is back to its old games. After dithering over the raging Telangana statehood issue for years, it now seems to have woken up to the seriousness of the issue ahead of the 2014 elections. According to sources, the Congress Core Committee, at its meeting in Delhi on Friday night, has decided, to unveil a financial package for Telangana in the hope that it would douse the flames of statehood agitation in the region. There are selective leaks to the media about the thinking of the party high command. It is also learnt that the ruling party would convene an all-party meeting after the conclusion of the budget session. The AICC General Secretary in-charge of Andhra Pradesh, Ghulam Nabi Azad, was also present at the core committee meeting where Telangana issue came up for some plain-speaking. It was tentatively decided that two options should be presented to the people as a solution to the festering Telangana problem. First, a financial package of Rs 20,000 to Rs 25,000 crore to Telangana for all-round development of the region and also a package for three districts in Rayalaseema and Coastal Andhra regions. Second option is to carve out 'Rayala Telangana' state by merging Kurnool, Anantapur and Kadapa districts with the Telangana to form the new state.
