Krishna on Wednesday said the Bangalore Metro Rail project will begin soon under the aegis of Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) managing director E. Sreedharan, the man behind the Konkan Rail Corporation. After flagging off the first set of metro rail coaches for DMRC, manufactured at the Bharat Earth Movers Ltd, Bangalore unit, Krishna congratulated BEML for its achievement. He egged them to export these coaches to bring pride to Karnataka and the nation. He said Bangalore had its pride of place. It was today getting ready to take over as the silicon valley of the world, even overtaking the original Silicon Valley in the US. Bangalore, with 1.85 lakh technical workers, has more than that of the Silicon Valley, where 1.21 lakh such workers function. The first batch of indigenously manufactured, air-conditioned stainless steel metro coaches were flagged off by the CM. It was manufactured at the BEML following technology transfer from MRM Consortium (Mitsubishi Corp., Japan), Rotem Company, Korea, and MELCO (Mitsubishi Electric Corp). The high-speed coaches are rust proof and have fibre-reinforced scratch resistant plastic interiors. They have a long life with lowest life cycle cost. These coaches will soon be put into commercial operations by DMRC, New Delhi. | ||

Bangalore, hobbled by a crumbling infrastructure, can look forward to an easier time on the roads in five year’s time with the Centre paving the way for the construction of the Bangalore Metro. The Union Cabinet today cleared the 33- km, two-corridor rail system at the cost of Rs 6,395 crore. To be executed by the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRC), the project is expected to provide an effective mass rapid transport system to the city. Of the Rs 6,395 crore required for the 33-km Phase I of the project, Rs 1,699 crore would be borrowed from the Japan Bank for International Cooperation, Rs 1,000 crore each, representing 15 per cent equities, would be provided by the Centre and the state government, while the remainder will be acquired through further borrowings. Of the 33 km, 25.65 km of the project would be elevated and only 6.7 km would be underground. The standard gauge system, modelled on the Delhi Metro, will, in the first phase, involve a north-south line of 14.9 km and an east-west line of 18.1 km. The project now confronts the problem of having to acquire 18.85 hectares of private property in sections of both proposed lines (26.5 hectares have also to be acquired from the government). Shop owners and residents in two areas that fall on the metro’s route have been protesting against the proposed takeover of their properties and a legal battle is in the offing. The proposal for a mass rapid transit system for Bangalore was first made in 1982. The project received impetus in the early 1990s when the state government created a special company to foster the project—the Bangalore Mass Rapid Transit Ltd (now BMRC). In 1994 under H D Deve Gowda as CM, BMRTL signed a deal to create an Elevated Light Rail System at a cost of Rs 2,800 crore with a consortium headed by the United Breweries group. However, the proposal was shelved as being unfeasible by the S M Krishna government that came to power in 1999. The Krishna government plumped for a metro rail proposal in collaboration with the Centre. The project hit fresh roadblocks when the Janata Dal(S)-Congress coalition government came to power in 2005, with Gowda questioning the wisdom behind a metro rail project. While the then chief minister Dharam Singh pushed for the project with the support of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and the Union Finance Ministry, Gowda urged reconsideration and mooted a monorail alternative. Gowda’s son Kumaraswamy, incumbent CM, has always been a supporter of the project—especially after he took a trip on the Delhi Metro with his wife within days of becoming CM.
