IBM job cuts will impact between 6,000 and 8,000 employees worldwide, Newsday reports June 12. Layoffs will include employees from seniority, executive, and staff levels. Some U.S. employees have already received their pink slips as of Tuesday night, according to Lee Conrad -- a coordinator for Alliance@IBM, an employee group. The IBM layoffs are being referred to by the company as a "resource action." Burlington Free Press reports that rumors have circulated for more than a month that expected job cuts were in the process due to a bad earnings report in April. “Every division has been hit,” Conrad said. “We’re getting resource action packages, which list the number of people fired only by division, not by location.” IBM job cuts are part of the $1 billion restructuring plan. Chief Financial Officer Mark Loughridge said the layoffs would happen or or before June 30 -- the end of the second quarter. Several workers have reported already receiving their "action resource" package. Last year in the U.S., there was 2,000 IBM layoffs. |
