excerpt from old article

What do you have to say to the people who voted for you?

I just want to say a big thank you to everyone who pressed that SMS button in my favour. I especially want to thank the people of Calcutta, even those who didn’t vote for me (laughs). That’s because I got into Bigg Boss because of Calcutta. Earlier this year, I had gone to South Africa with Shah Rukh Khan to cheer for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL. There I met Akshay and people from the Colors team and that’s how I landed up in the show. I am a KKR man, I am a Sourav Ganguly fan!

Calcutta got me into the show’
- How Vindu dara singh, a KKR man, won Bigg Boss 3

Akshay Kumar is his close friend. Abhishek Bachchan has been tweeting up support for him for weeks now. Every week he has evaded eviction by a large vote margin. For many, there was never any doubt that Vindu Dara Singh would take home the Bigg Boss 3 crown. t2 spoke to the elated and emotional “KKR man” minutes after the win…

Has the feeling sunk in yet?

I am on top of the world. I can’t believe that I have won. This is the best day of my life. Not only have I won Bigg Boss 3, I have also won the car (a Chevrolet Cruz for the most bold and stylish contestant). I am so happy that I won everything but I also feel guilty that the other contestants didn’t win anything!

What was the winning moment like?

When my name was announced, I actually didn’t realise that I had won. I thought that I had just won the car. When I realised that I had won the show, I went completely blank for a moment. Luck smiled on me throughout the show and it has luck that has made me the last man standing today.

Apart from luck, what is it that worked in your favour?

Truth, humility, humanity and the virtues and principles that my parents have instilled in me. Everyone knows that I am a good guy, my friends say that, my driver says that, even the watchmen in my building say that. I call a spade a spade and I have a pure heart. Everyone in the house was playing a game, but I was just living my life the way I do it outside. All the other contestants knew in their hearts that they could not win against me because I was true and there was no pretence from my end even for a single day. This game was a cakewalk for me and I don’t mind spending another six months in the Bigg Boss house!

When did you first realise that you could win Bigg Boss?

I knew from the beginning that it would either be Raju (Shrivastava) or me. We were the only ones who deserved to win. Even Poonamji (Dhillon) had a very good chance. But to be honest, the only day I got a little unsure and unsteady was the day when Raju got eliminated instead of Pravesh (Rana) and I got saved by a small margin of votes. That was the only day when my heart went boom boom boom! What are your best Bigg Boss memories? I got a lot of happiness in the house. There were some trying moments but overall it was a happy and fulfiling journey. I made a lot of friends, I understood the value of a lot of small things that make up life and I know that every co-contestant of mine will say one thing — Vindu bade dil ka aadmi hai. All I want to say is that Bigg Boss wasn’t a game for me, it was a way of life for me.

And the most difficult times?

The first week was very difficult because it was a new environment and new people. Things were so bad that I wanted to break the door and run out of the house. But a session with a psychologist made me feel a lot better. I then realised that I am a tiger and I have to come out of this like a tiger. And all the times you saw me speaking to myself, it was real and not for the cameras. I didn’t trust anyone in the house and do didn’t want to speak my heart out to them. I was speaking to India through the cameras.

Your father Dara Singh had told us last week that he didn’t know that you could get so emotional. What have you discovered about yourself in these 84 days?

Well, even I didn’t know that I could get so emotional. Actually till today, there hasn’t been anything in my life that could make me cry like this. Even my divorce from (actress) Farah was peaceful. I have never fought with my present wife (Dina). I think the last time I cried was when I watched Kuch Kuch Hota Hai some 10 years ago! But in Bigg Boss, emotions were at a high. Everyone was high-strung, everyone was playing a game of one-upmanship. Every contestant cried, I cried a little extra. But one thing I have realised is that I have to weigh my words and think before I speak.

How will you spend the one crore prize money?

Buy a lot of things for a lot of people.

Finally, what is the first thing that Vindu will do now?

I will kiss my daughter (Amelia) a thousand times. I will touch my mother and father’s feet and I will party the whole night with my friends. My life’s just started.
