Uma Bharti backs Advani over Modi for PM's job TNN May 16, 2013, 01.55AM IST NEW DELHI: BJP leader Uma Bharti on Wednesday publicly challenged Narendra Modi's claim to be NDA's prime ministerial candidate and backed L K Advani for the top job, once again exposing the faultlines within the party over the Gujarat CM and underlining the difficulty that the opposition faces while settling on who should lead it into the 2014 polls. In separate interviews to Times Now and PTI, the former Madhya Pradesh CM who was recently rehabilitated mocked the argument that Modi should be projected as PM candidate on the ground of his popularity. "Crowd puller factor does not make a leader a PM candidate. Just like Narendra Modi, if I go to some place, same crowd will come. So you cannot say if crowds come to him... he's the PM candidate," she told Times Now, remarks which seemed to rebut the argument that Modi's pull among the ranks entitles him to be projected as PM candidate. In contrast, she was all praise for Advani who, importantly, played a key role in her return to the BJP fold after a long political exile. "Not everyone can be compared to Advaniji," she told Times Now. Bharti spoke about Advani in the same vein in a separate conversation she had with PTI. "Many people have to sit and decide who should be the PM candidate. Atal Bihari Vajpayee and L K Advani are such leaders who have contributed so much that whether they hold any post or not, their importance will not be lessened. Advani is a saint," she told the news agency. Although she avoided a direct reply to a question about Modi's credentials to be the PM candidate, she made it plain that he was one among many including Advani. "Crowd pulling capacity alone cannot be the criteria. There are several BJP leaders who are big crowd pullers. Modi is one, so is Advani, Sushma Swaraj. I am also a crowd puller," she added. The forceful intervention for Advani, who by all accounts seems willing for a fresh shot at being PM, will reinforce the perception of continuing disarray in the party at a time when its sympathizers feel the disappointment with UPA has brought it strongly back into the reckoning. It is interesting also for the reaction that it may draw from MP CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan who did not seem comfortable with the rehabilitation of Bharti, but acquiesced into pressure from seniors on the condition that the temperamental leader would keep a low profile in the state. Interestingly, Modi's opponents had sought to set up Chouhan as a counter to the Gujarat CM, saying that in terms of performance, he ranked second to none among the BJP CMs. |
