Give Backward Classes status or perish, Kapu mantris tell Congress TNN | May 15, 2013, 06.35 AM IST HYDERABAD: Claiming that the Congress would need the Kapu votes if it has to return to power in 2014, 15 ruling party leaders belonging to this forward community on Tuesday demanded that the Kapus be included in the list of Backward Classes (BCs) in the state. The 15 Kapu ministers and MLAs met at the residence of endowments minister C Ramachandraiah and resolved to exert pressure on the Congress high command for the inclusion of the community in the BC list. Those who took part in Tuesday's meeting comprised only the forward community Kapus. Leaders like PCC president Botsa Satyanarayana (Toorpu Kapu) and IT minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah (Munnur Kapu) were not invited as they belong to the Kapu variants which are already in the BC fold. Apart from Ramachandraiah, those who attended the meeting included infrastructure minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao, culture minister Vatti Vasant Kumar, stamps and registration minister Thota Narasimham, and MLAs Thota Trimurthulu, Vanga Geetha, Bandaru Satyanarayana, P Ramesh Babu, Ch Venkatramaiah and Muttamsetti Srinivasa Rao. Agriculture minister Kanna Lakshminarayana could not attend the meeting due to a pressing engagement but lent his support to the cause. In all, there are 26 Kapu MLAs in the current state assembly. The meeting decided to organize rallies and meetings in the state as well as send delegations to New Delhi to meet party president Sonia Gandhi and exert pressure on the Congress high command. "We will meet again in Hyderabad on May 16 and formulate an action plan. That meeting will be attended by all the mass organizations of Kapus," Ramachandraiah said. According to the endowments minister, granting BC status to the Kapus was one of the pre-conditions for the merger of the Prajarajyam party with the Congress. In fact, it was the Kapu votes that fetched the 18 assembly seats for the Prajarajyam party and if the community's votes have to remain with the Congress and Chiranjeevi to play a crucial role, the Kapus have to be given BC status, he said. Without the support of the Kapus, it would be difficult for the Congress to return to power, Ramachandraiah added. "The Reddys, SCs and minorities are going to the YSR Congress. The Kammas and backward castes are with the TDP. The only caste left for the Congress is Kapus," he said adding that resentment that the Congress had not done anything for the Kapus was growing among the members of the community. However, to avoid any generation of hostility with the other backward classes, the Kapu MLAs want additional quota for their community in the BCs based on their population and do not want to eat into the existing quota. "We want reservations not at the cost of other backward castes. We want additional quota even if it crosses the 50% stipulation laid down by the Supreme Court. When states like Tamil Nadu and Karnataka are allowed to have up to 61% reservation, there should not be any bar on other states," Ramachandraiah told TOI. |
