I guess the answer would depend on whether its to your benefit or not - else why would there be so many people broadcasting their affiliations  Stereotyping probably has evolutionary roots ,a survival skill to be able to categorise animals and people into friend/foe groups We do it all the time - to sort and group the thousands of people we meet in our lives...we do it by the company they keep , by their interests,so many other parameters to decide who we want to interact with However,if we treat people shabbily, or withhold opportunities because of that grouping , it becomes an issue ...
