After sitting over the notices given by the Congress and the Telugu Desam Party seeking disqualification of their respective rebel MLAs who had voted against the Kiran Kumar Reddy government during the no-confidence motion moved by the YSR Congress party and the Telangana Rashtra Samithi, assembly speaker Nadendla Manohar on Monday issued notices on as many as 18 rebel MLAs seeking their explanation. The Speaker directed the rebel MLAs that they should personally appear before him on May 13 and 14 and give an explanation as to why they had defied the whips of their respective parties and voted in favour of the no-confidence motion. Nine of them should appear before the Speaker on May 13 and the remaining nine on May 14. The Speaker’s direction, after a long wait, came as no surprise to the rebel MLAs, as they are prepared to be disqualified. In fact, they wrote letters to the Speaker to disqualify them at the earliest so that there would be by-elections in the state. However, Manohar took his own time to issue notices. Now that they are asked to give explanation on May 13 and 14, the Speaker would take another week or two to pronounce their disqualification. It would serve no purpose, as the EC cannot hold by-elections to the vacant seats as per the rules.
