Thearchitect:Effective April 26, 2013 the US Customs & Border Protection Agency (CBP) will be allowed to begin issuing paperless I-94s. This means that if you reenter the US on or after this date you will most likely not receive the white card you are used to seeing. The CBP officer will only place a stamp in your passport. This stamp will be sufficient for proving your legal status in the US in most circumstances. When entering the US, please make sure that your passport is stamped. Please note the passport stamp will not be sufficient for proving employment eligibility (form I-9) and some other government agencies (such as state Drivers License authorities). To satisfy these requirements you may print a record of your electronic Form I-94 from the CBP website at www.cbp.gov/i94 in order to have tangible Form I-94 arrival documentation. The new rule specifies that "providing a printout of information from DHS systems containing an electronic record of admission or arrival/departure" is the same as presentation of a paper Form I-94 card whenever such a paper Form I-94 is required. I strongly encourage you to print your I-94 record each time you enter the US. If you do print your record, please send me a copy so I can add it to your file. Travel to Canada and Mexico remains unchanged at this time. You may still travel to these countries for less than 30 days without surrendering your I-94 card.
