âUpgrade fire fighting facility at Gannavaram airportâ

The Gannavaram airport lost yet another chance to have a direct flight to Mumbai via Hyderabad as it did not have the required level of fire fighting equipment or infrastructure to receive Boeing 737-800 planes.

Permission denial

The Jet Airways wanted to start a service from Mumbai to Vijayawada via Hyderabad from March 31. But the Airport Authority of India did not give permission as the airport lacks the Category 6 fire service capability. Making this observation, the Andhra Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Muthavarapu Muralikrishna has appealed to the AAI to equip the Vijayawada (Gannavaram) airport with fire fighting capability to receive even A 320/321 types of aircraft in addition to Boeing 737-800 planes.

âThe Jet Airways had announced a month ago online launching of the service and sold tickets. The demand was also very good, but due to lack of the AAI permission, they had cancelled the flight,â said Mr. Muralikrishna. The need for upgradation of the fire fighting capacity was not an investment-intensive measure, hence it should be done immediately, he added.

The Andhra Chamber president also wanted the security hold areas at the existing terminal be improved and made larger as many passengers were forced to wait in long queues.

Chamber chief says he has been pressuring the government on land price

Airports Authority of India and the State Government entered into a memorandum of understanding in 2007 for the expansion of Gannavaram Airport, but the chances of the MoU turning into reality are bleak in near future.

State Infrastructure & Investment, Ports, Airports & Natural Gas Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao during his recent visit to the city had announced a Rs.70-crore grant for expansion of the runway and construction of new terminal building, but State Budget for 2013-14 saw only an allocation of Rs.90 lakh.

This shows the intent of the State Government as 475-acre land acquisition, which is key factor in this process, cannot be taken up and obviously this is the last nail in the coffin of the six-year-old project. Road block in the project has been the non-fixing of amicable rate for land acquisition and none of the public representatives from Krishna district seems interested in furthering this project.

The Gannavaram airport has night-landing facility, Instrument Landing facility, and automated air-traffic control system is under trial. Once the DGCA gives permission, it will be declared operational.

With all these infrastructure facilities and a great potential of passenger patronage, Gannavaram can develop into a major international airport.

Experts feel if the runway, which is 7,500 feet now is expanded up to the irrigation canal, wide-bodied aircraft can land and long-distance flights within the country and international flights also can be started. For the initial expansion about 300 acres can be acquired utilising the existing facilities. âSome land available with the airport and first phase acquisition can lead to launching of works,â opined Communist Party of India (Marxist) city unit leader Ch. Babu Rao.

The Andhra Pradesh Chamber of Commerce president Mutthavarapu Murali Krishna said that he along with like-minded people had been pressuring the State Government and had met the District Collector regarding the price that could be offered to the farmers from whom land had to be acquired. He opined that initiative had to come from the State Government in the form of bigger amount of grant in the State Budget.

The Vijayawada-based LEPL Air Costa, which is likely to launch its domestic operations in South India from Mid or End-April, would also like the airport to expand. The airport currently has hangar facility for only seven aircraft. The Opposition parties allege that private company managing the Samshabad Airport was also not too keen to see the Vijayawada Airport develop as that would reduce passenger traffic from the coastal districts.

Rs. 70 crore sanctioned for airport development

http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/Vijayawada/rs-70-crore-s anctioned-for-airport-development/article4494414.ece

Minister for Infrastructure, Ports, and Airports Ganta Srinivasa Rao has said the government sanctioned Rs.70 crore for developing the Gannavaram airport.

Mr. Srinivasa Rao, along with Information Technology and Communications Minister Ponnala Lakshmaiah, visited the Sri Durga Malleswara Swamyvarla Devasthanam on Saturday and had darshan of the goddess.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Srinivasa Rao said that Collector Budha Prakash M. Jyothi had sent proposals for acquiring 490 acres and asked the government to allot Rs.90 crore for the expansion of the airport.

The government had accepted the proposals and sanctioned the amount for the benefit of farmers of the region.

Bandar Port

As regards the Bandar Port, the government would take steps to acquire 5,000 acres and begin work soon, he said.

To avoid any objections from the farmers, the government would soon organise an all-party meeting, involving farmers, for paying suitable compensation for the lands to be acquired for the expansion of the port, Mr. Srinivasa Rao said.

New flights to Chennai, Hyderabad

http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/tp-andhrapr adesh/new-flights-to-chennai-hyderabad/article4514592.ece

The domestic airliner Air Costa will launch its services between Vijayawada-Hyderabad and Vijayawada-Chennai shortly. The services are likely to be available from April. Air Costa, the first-ever regional domestic airline, sources say, has planned to launch the services from March, but postponed to next month.

The complete information is not available as Air Costa Managing Director Lingamaneni Ramesh is abroad and as per sources the company has plans to make a formal announcement in Hyderabad soon.

The city will have direct air connectivity to Chennai if Air Costa plans are put to action. At present, the Air India, SpiceJet and Jet Airways are operating flights only to Hyderabad, Bangalore and Delhi from here (Gannavaram airport). Daily four flights â two SpiceJet flights, one each by Air India and Jet Airways â are being operated from the city.

The airliner has popped in and out of news ever since it made an announcement of the receipt of the No-Objection Certificate from the Ministry of Civil Aviation to go ahead with the launch of the airline operations last February.

It proposes to launch the airlines with a fleet of Canadian Q 400 Bombardier aircraft that are most-suitable for the regional short-haul connectivity between tier-II and III cities in South India with major metros.

First airliner

Air Costa could be the first airliner in the country to operate on the regional routes, particularly in tier-II cities like Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam and Tirupati.

Lingamaneni Estates Private Limited which has strong presence in infrastructure etc, is promoting Air Costa.
