All time classic in tfi..
Lava Kusa is a landmark film in Telugu Cinema history and one of the biggest hits of all times. Released on March 29, 1963, Lava Kusa ushered in era of color movies in Tollywood. The film was shot and released in Geva color, ending the era of Black and White movies in Telugu Cinema.

Lava Kusa starring Late NT Ramarao and Anjali Devi as Lord Rama and Goddess Sita Devi respectively was directed by C. Pullaiah and C. S. Rao. It has 37 songs and verses. The songs composed by legendary singer and music director Ghantasala are popular even today. Some of the songs like - Ye Nimishaniki Yemi Jaruguno Evaroohinchedaru, Vinudu Vinudu Ramayana Gaatha Vinudee, and Sriraamuni Charithamunu Telipedamamma - are played at temples in Andhra Pradesh.

The film began its shoot in 1958 but ran into financial troubles and went on to continue its shoot for five years. But this gap of nearly five years made some artistes look old especially the boys who played Lava and Kusa. When the film eventually released, audiences were mesmerized by the beauty of the film, music and great performances by NTR and Anjali Devi that they hardly cared these glitches.

Producer Shankara Reddy began the film to complete with Rs 5 - 6 Lakhs of budget but the movie was wrapped up at the cost of Rs 60 Lakhs. Thanks to Sunderlal Nahata, he could finish it up in 1963 and release it on March 29th in the same year.

Director C Pullaiah passed away before the completion of the movie, so his son C S Rao wrapped it up.

The film was a runaway hit. People from villages came on their bullock carts to the theatres in towns and stayed there for days to get tickets, oldies recall.

The film is not based on Ramayanam, written by Valmiki. It is extension of Ramayanam, also known as Uttara Ramayanam. Lord Rama sends Sita to forests, basing on a comment made by a washer man. Sita gives birth to twins Lava and Kusa. How these twins unite Lord Rama and Sita forms the rest of the drama. But Rama gets separated from his wife Sita, who enters into mother earth.

Lava Kusa was made in Telugu and Tamil languages simultaneously. NTR, Anjali Devi and Nagaiah figured in both the versions.

Lava Kusa won National Award for Best Regional Language film in Telugu and was screened at couple of international films too.
