MALAYALAM Operating budgets: Big (5+ cr), medium (2-3cr) and small (1 cr) Trend: With old warhorses Mohanlal and Mammootty on adecline, and established stars like Prithiviraj and Dileep unpredictable in terms of form, the younger generation has taken over Malayalam cinema. Actors like Dulquer Salmaan, Fahad Fazil and VineethSreenivasan along with a dozen other names are the new faces. Shooting in digital with scripts that are amixture of arthouse and commercial elements, they have created a new genre that has been dubbed 'New Gen Cinema'. Rising stars: Dulquer Salmaan, Fahad Fazil, Nivin Pauly,Ann Augustine, Honey Rose, Rima Kallingal, Remya Nambeesan Promising directors: Vineeth Sreenivasan, Aashiq Abu, Lijin Jose, Lijo Jose Pallisery and Arun Kumar Aravind Remakes: The success of new-age Malayalam films has producers from other southIndian languages and Bollywood queuing up to bag their remakerights. But, tradeexperts caution that what worked in Malayalam mightnot work elsewhere as the essence of the script might be lost in translation. Market for other language films: Dubbed films of Allu Arjundo well in Kerala while only films of top Tamil actors click at the BO. Tax: 20 per centfor all films Box Office: There are no restrictions on ticket pricing or number of shows. Average ticket price is anywhere between Rs 150 and Rs 180 (multiplexes) and between Rs 50 and Rs 80 (single screens). Titles: English titles are the current rage. KANNADA Operating budgets: Big (12 to 20 cr), medium (3 to 10 cr) and small (1 to 2 cr) Trend: The focus has shifted from stars to quality scripts. Successful films seem to be in varied genres though films based on real-life ( Dandupalya , Attahasa ) seem to hit the target very frequently. The number of releases has actually come down (130+ in 2011 to 90+ in 2012), but industry observers say this is a change for the better asfilm-related individuals are getting into film production rather than cash-rich real estate agents orentrepreneurs. Also, crowd-funded films could be the norm following Pawan Kumar's Lucia. Rising stars: Yash, Diganth, Prajwal, Dhruv Sarja, Chiranjeevi Sarja, Parul Yadav, Sindhu Loknath and Bhama Promising directors: Nagashekar, R Chandru, Pawan Kumar, Suri Remakes: Remaking successful medium and small budget films from other south Indian languages is a growing trend. Tax: Kannada films do not pay any entertainment tax. Other language films and dubbed filmshave to pay 40 per cent tax. Box Office: Theatres operate on flexi-pricing. Rates forweekend and weekday shows are different and depend on the film. 3D films are charged at even higher rates. Multiplexes charge around 220 on weekdays (though some charge as low as 100 on Wednesday) andthis goes up to 350 and even 500 on weekends. Single screens in cities charge between 120 and 140 while those in smaller towns charge between 70 and 80. There is no mandatory lowest ticket price. Title restrictions: There were restrictions earlier, but they have been removed Southindian new megastar,TFI official NO.1 RAMCHARAN |

TAMIL Operating budgets: Big (25+ cr), medium (6-12 cr) and small (2-6 cr) Trend: Comedies and rom-coms are clicking at the BO. Digital cameras and new technologies are being introduced. The number of releases has shot up considerably (160+ in 2012). New faces and new-age producers (NRIs, businessmen and corporates) have become the norm. Meanwhile, top stars show little sign of losing their shine despite 2012 being a lukewarm year for films riding on star power. Promising directors: BalajiMohan, Balaji Tharaneetharan,Karthik Subburaj, Pa Ranjith, Santhakumar Remakes: Remaking hit Telugu and Malayalam films for a medium budget with a viable star is in. Now Hindi remakes are alsotaking off. Market for other language films: Massy Telugu films dubbed in Tamil have a considerable fan base in B and C centres. Malayalam films have a dedicated audience but Kannada films don't. Tax: 30 per cententertainment tax for films rated 'U/A' and 'A'. Tax exemption for 'U'rated films. No tax exemption for films with English titles or other language words Box office: Thegovernment has restricted the number of shows to four a day with special shows on weekends and festival days though some theatres flout the rules. TELUGU Operating budgets: Big (30 cr ), medium (10 to 20 cr ) and small (1 to 3 cr) Trend: Big star films have to be either action dramas or family entertainers to succeed. The younger crop of actors seems to prefer comedies and rom-coms. Tamil filmsand stars were posing a threat in 2011 but sinceno Tamil star filmdid well in 2012, the industry has stopped looking at them as competition.
