I guess the worse concert was for Toronto audience.:-)

San Jose got the best show. Raja seemed more happy/relaxed at the SJ concert. Though in terms of songs, I think Raja needs to realize that most people listening or coming to concerts are people who come for entertainment too, and not just music. So peppy songs, good narrations are required.

For exclusive music lovers, he should do special shows with limited audience.

And multilingual concerts are a pain. I know all these different associations join together so the cost would be spread out but it's better if they acted individually and had separate language concerts. Too much grievance otherwise.

I admire his respect for Janaki. My understanding is that he is not so generous with everyone when it comes to giving credit. Speaks volumes about S.Janaki's talent.

another point from same nj show review}
Dont think he can handle multilingual audiance, would be nice if he just let SPB take over tamil/telugu mix of song selection and addressing the crowd in english. I think telugu fans felt a little let down.

went to the NJ concert. venue was very good, it was great to see the crowd building up before the concert, there was awesome sense of excitement/anticipation in the crowd, felt like being in a close family function.

there was delay, concert started at 7PM. "NJV" , based on your posts, I am assuming you were the person on the stage before the concert with the lady in blue sarree, you did a good job, cant say the same for your co-host

the concert started with an instrumental piece raaja said was composed for this tour and then it was janani janani, I get goosebumps just typing that up, it was surreal seeing him. just that was worth going to the concert.

Did not want to start the post with a negative tone, but there were issues. while i didnt have great seats on the floor like some other posters seemed to have had, i did have decent seat ($100) on the lower level about 20-30 rows above the floor almost in straight line from the stage. when i walked in, i was bracing myself for awesome sound. But when the concert started, it was like music out of a boombox. It was very very frustrating, it sounded like just speakers up front near the stage were on, I don't know how they setup sound for rock concerts which must happen at this venue but if it was this way people would ask for money back. it was as if no rehearsal was performed earlier to test the sound. I am not technical enough to explain what was wrong, but there definitely was not enough bass, couldnt hear the chorus, it was tough to hear Ramya's voice in saindhu sanduh etc,.. it went on like this for nearly half the concert, by the time they hit Sundhari kannal oru seidhi everything seemed to have been taken care of, it sounded great except they cut off Chitra's mic right after an interlude for a couple .

Good:
Vanitha mani was pleasant surprise, was great
Raaja, at least at the beginning was in good mood, was having fun singing.
As always, SPB, Chitra, Mano and Karthik, for that matter all singers (except one) were very good
thamthana thamthana had a new arrangement was very good. IR said it was done specifically for the tour as well. crowd asked for a repeat, mano was stand-in MC and didnt really get what was requested
there was very little random speechifying on stage, once the music started it was all about music for good portion of the first half
Raaja appreciated the telugu version of the lyrics for maasi maasam, whatever people say about him not appreciating wordings is not accurate
At one point SPB said, "I have been asking him to do tours for a while, i am glad he has finally started". Raaja said that he would like to but it takes a lot of effort and despite everything they do, mistakes happen on stage and every time that happens he feels thousand pin . He was very honest (as always) and humble about it, felt like he gets demotivated by it.
He credited Karthik (raaja) for helping him with arrangements for thendral vanthu (again, this was another song that got messed up by sound where i was sitting) and several other songs
there were lot more good stuff like these

not so good:
He did lecture the crowd at one point when there were repeated requests. he even implied that it was disrespectful. I think his point was that they have prepared several good songs and it will not be fair to just play something without preparing ahead...
Karthik was heavily under utilized.
Songs were great for rabid fans like us, but some more peppy songs would have worked the crowd better.
Yuvan, Karthik raja and karthik attempted an impromptu (at least it felt that way) rendition of "roading mele" it didnt work very well

Bad:
There was a clear sigh ("ayyoo..") in the section of crowd where I was every time Bavatharini was asked to sing, clearly the weakest singer.
Sound

Toronto show

Show stared 2 hours late due to late arrival of orchestra. Gopinath tried to control the crowd and asked people to song their songs and it was a disaster.

Parthian as usual was poetic and gave apt intro to songs.

Raja sir unsurprisingly sand Janani Janani, but sang very well compared to other shows.

SPB, Chitra, Karthik and all junior singers sang very well.

Hariharan was much better than other shows .

Madhu balakrishnan sang perfectly. In fact he was the only one who received clap immediately after he started singing alaap.

Many mistakes by everyone. Didn't felt like watching professional show. This is not 80s or 90s. There are many channels and multiple talent show, so people are more aware of small mistakes.

Raja must also understand that every single show he has done is on you tube, hence he should either tell different stories or just focus on performance. He repeated "nila adhu vaanathumalae" from Coimbatore show.

Yuvan spoke from his heart and said my dad was never there for me, but my mom closed the gap and she was my mom an dad and that is what allowed appa to focus on music.

Karthik mentioned that it is their moms thithi. He was bit emotional. However, looks like he forgot the skit and the whole episode of he calling SPB and SPB randomly talking about "raathiriyil poothirukkum" and how no one can do such a song in same raaga and maestro immediately sang "maanguyile poonguyile" lyrics in "raathiriyil" tune - I am sure when see them in TV, it will look really nice, but on stage it looked like a well prepared, but poorly executed script.

Crowd was so tired after waiting for over 2 hours forgot to clap. All anchors asked crowd to clap. Raja at some point said "enakku kevalamaa irukku, don't ask them to clap".

Crowd constantly took break for dinner/snacks.

Finishing was abrupt due to time constraints.

Everyone forgot to mention female artist name. Parthiban was little arrogant too. He said e only remember beautiful facea and not names. Vivek mentioned Sadana when Chitra was the actual singer. Even Raja sir forgot to intro female singers at the end, but he apologized and introduce them at the end.

Audio system wasn't great, starting from the time ads were going on. Don't they test it from all areas! This is not acceptable.

Irrespective of the many mess, few gems.

Om Shivohm - goosebumps
Née Paartha Paarvai - lovely
Isaiyil thodanguthamma - brilliant
Pottuvaiththa kaadhal thittam - freaking awesome

reply from another fan, in ref. to first point

They started playing the intro BGM without telling IR. maestro was eating his sandwich and suddenly called to be on stage. He didnt have time to drink water as well. Until the last step, he was eating/cleaning left over in his mouth. I was bit concerned and thought he might choke, but managed very well.

Before that IR and SPB were comparing 2 sandwiches! SPB wasn't hungry, but IR forced him to eat (urimayudan "saapiduda apparam pasikkum").

After the show on our way back to car, IR said "janaki is the only artist who could render the song as is and Chitra is the next best" and someone in the car mentioned that "Janaki scolded you in a recent TV interview" and IR said "sollittu poraanga, yaar Yaaro edho solraanga, avanga sonna thappillai". He has lot of respect and admiration for Janaki.

what an incredible experience - too bad I couldnt meet up with IR backstage!

HP Pavilion had a festival effect !

hubbers, next time I visit bay area, would love to meet up with some of us.

highlights for me:

1. IR entering the stage like a military commander and starting the concert right on time!

2. the IR-SPB camaraderie - SPB explaining the harmonic score of 'oh priya priya' on strings, goosebumps all the way - this is what I expected.

3. I had explained to my friends outside the hall abt how Mano has often butchered SPBs telugu songs in tamil - 'o papa lali' by SPB became, 'o BAABAA lali' (like baba black sheep have you any wool) by Mano in tamil - and when mano came onstage, i was getting all nervous, but he stuck to his 'shenbagamey' - what a relief - but IR found a mistake even in that rendition "sammadhamey became sammAAAAdhamey" - Mano was teased so much - after that, Mano was relegated to doing compering and edupidi velai!

4. Chithra - what a simplicity and no hassle presence onstage - hats off - 'ninnukori varnam' on stage was pattai kilappufying - the orchestration was topnotch

5. IR - as usual - some philosophical lectures - in-between the show!

6. I was speaking abt IR's telugu scores eloquently before the show referencing Abinandana in particular - and when SPB sang 'adhe neevu' i was overjoyed, but let down a bit when the song was rendered without those glorious interludes!

7.'balapam patti', 'priyaa priyathamaa' and the immortal 'priyathamaa, nanu' from JVAS - all of which were marana mass hits when they came out - were justifiably performed, especially the last song which had some very intricate strings section in the second interlude - IR gave them accolades just for that song!
