Simba:

This VPN supports all kind of protocols including L2TP, PPTP, IPSec. I could VPN using my iPhone (on 4g).

Interesting. I used to VPN on my iPhone to my office network before. Good that you are using for home network.

Thanks for sharing. :-)

s/w is free to try for 180 days. Naaku msdn subscription undhi thru office. I can get a license when I need :-)

VPN needs opening port on router but you need VPN service running on a box in your home network that does authentication and access control. This is built into windows server edition.

This VPN supports all kind of protocols including L2TP, PPTP, IPSec. I could VPN using my iPhone (on 4g).

"Windows Server 2012 Essentials"

Awesome. :-) where did you get this s/w?

How is VPN different from opening a port? Probably with VPN you can do whatever you want, but port opening is tied to that process/application/machine. Right?

What VPN client s/w you use to connect from outside?

Off topic.

My HP EX495 home server was running Windows Home Server OS. Microsoft has abandoned this OS couple years ago and there is no hardware vendor making these machines anymore. Baagane work avuthundi, but

Weekend saradaga, aa machine lo "Windows Server 2012 Essentials" install chesa. It was challenging to install on headless machine. It looks awesome at the end. All my media is available within the network and outside with much friendlier UI. Bonus - it comes pre-installed with VPN. Once setup, now I can VPN into my home from work or anywhere outside. This gives full control of home computers from road, including RDP. Very cool.

naku nenu external ip tho try chesthe access avvadam ledu..

Of course, it does not work for you with external ip either. One way to try is, open a port on your router and forward to your local machine (internal ip). Then you try accessing the web service with external ip. If that works, give him your external ip. I am not sure, which port you need to open. You need to read some documentation.

your internal IP cannot be accessed outside.

even your external IP also cannot be accessed, unless you open the port on your router AND modem.

as Simba said, if you are in VPN, try ipconfig again...and give the new internal IP to your friend, then he can access...(provided your friend is also in office/VPN network).

internal ip tho try chethe i can access, but external ip tho try chesthe i cannot access..

Here is the right way to do.

You connect to your corporate VPN and note down the internal IP. The other person should also be on corporate network (either in office or VPN to work). Give your internal IP to the other person to access your web service.

If either of you is not on office network, the webservice will not be accessible. Forget about external ip (what shows on the DB)

working from home..

Are you on VPN? If so, you get new internal IP upon connecting to VPN.

If you are not on VPN, then your ISP gives you external IP and your router gives you internal IP (192.168.x.x)

same concept...if you have 10 devices at home, it will have 10 different internal IP addresses...but only one external IP which is your IP shown in DB posts...

usually internals begins with 10.0.0.x and external is from your provider.
