BJP today played down Wharton's cancellation of video address by Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi, saying he enjoys huge popularity in India and does not need an acceptance certificate from any international body. "It is Modi's acceptance in India that matters. He needs no certificate from any international forum. He had not filed an application to speak at Wharton. They had invited him. Let them keep it," BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain said. Wharton Business School had invited Modi to deliver an address via video conference on March 22-23 but cancelled it yesterday following uproar from a section of university professors and students for inviting him. The post-Godhra riots of 2002 continue to haunt Modi at the international fora. The US has denied him a visa. Hussain said Gujarat is progressing under Modi's leadership and the whole world is recognising this now. "While there is a growing acceptance of Modi around the world, the MMC trio - of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Planning Commission Deputy Chairperson Montek Singh Ahluwalia and Finance Minister P Chidambaram - is bringing down the GDP of the country," he said. BJP maintained that a certificate from the people is more important for a leader and Modi has got this through a vote for him in the Assembly elections. Modi was hailed at the just concluded BJP National Council for this third consecutive election victory in Gujarat. "This should be the criteria and the parameter for (judging) Modi. It does not matter what a lobby based in the US is thinking," Hussain said. |

We might NOT like the US (Visa Denying)/Wharton (Cancelling the speech) decisions. But if you think, MODI might be a GREAT LEADER for us Indians/Hindus, but he is a CONTROVERSIAL figure. I believe these decisions are RIGHT decisions. For eg., we might NOT LIKE Iran's Ahmadinejad and appreciate US rejecting Visa for him, but for IRANIANS he is a GREAT LEADER. When it comes to Modi, our reaction to US rejection of Visa is EXACTLY opposite. |

After outrage, Wharton School cancels Narendra Modi's keynote address at India Economic Forum Edited by Ashish Mukherjee (with inputs from agencies) | Updated: March 03, 2013 23:05 IST After outrage, Wharton School cancels Narendra Modi's keynote address at India Economic Forum New Delhi: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi's keynote address at the India Economic Forum in Philadelphia later this month has been cancelled by the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, a top US business school. The organisers said in a statement that while they stood by the decision to invite Mr Modi, adverse reactions from among the stakeholders involved had prompted the decision. "Our team felt that the potential polarising reactions from sub-segments of the alumni base, student body and our supporters might put Mr Modi in a compromising position, which we would like to avoid at all costs," the statement said. "We do not endorse any political views and do not support any specific ideology. Our goal as a team is only to stimulate valuable dialogue on India's growth story," the statement said. Mr Modi had been approached by the Wharton School's students' body, which organises the India Economic Forum, and he had agreed to deliver a keynote address through video conference on March 23. Later, a group of Wharton's professors and students wrote a strongly-worded letter saying they were outraged to learn that Mr Modi had been invited as a speaker. "This is the same politician who was refused a diplomatic visa by the United States State Department on March 18, 2005 on the ground that he, as Chief Minister, did nothing to prevent a series of orchestrated riots that targeted Muslims in Gujarat," their letter said. Wharton India Economic Forum is an annual student-run India-centric conference hosted by the Wharton School. The speakers for the meeting are usually chosen by the students' body. A student from the group of organisers told NDTV they invited Mr Modi because they were impressed with Gujarat's growth story. Last month, the Gujarat Chief Minister had faced protests while delivering a speech at Delhi's prestigious Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC). As he addressed the students, another group outside raised slogans and protested against him, saying the invitation overlooked the communal riots in Gujarat in 2002. The police had to use water cannons and canes to control the protests. |
