Corporates behind clamour for Narendra Modi as PM: Sharad Yadav
Sachin Parashar, TNN Feb 9, 2013, 04.12AM IST

NEW DELHI: The heated debate over Gujarat CM Narendra Modi's likely projection as BJP's PM candidate continues to stir the NDA waters with JD(U) leader and convener of the opposition alliance Sharad Yadav saying corporate interests are propping up Modi as the choice for the top job.

Reflecting a growing restiveness in JD(U) ranks over a build-up of the momentum in favour of Modi despite Bihar CM Nitish Kumar's strong reservations, Yadav said that a saffron agenda will not find place in the NDA's scheme of things.

"This search for a Prime Minister should stop now," said Yadav when asked about Modi's emergence as a probable prime ministerial candidate. "This is like doing a research for a nuclear bomb. NDA has never said anything. There are many corporate companies that are at work on this," he added. "We've not taken any decision. When the time is right, we will definitely make an announcement," he said.

The strains in the JD(U) are apparent as the party has dropped its stridency in opposing Modi as a BJP and NDA nominee. From its earlier insistence that NDA make its PM choice clear well in advance of the 2014 election - a stance aimed at ruling out Modi - the party is now saying the decision should be taken after the poll.

Asked about the EU's apparent softening on Modi, Yadav went on to describe the bloc as a self-seeking organization. "I am not running the European Union. It is a Union that has been formed for selfish means. NDA has a national agenda and all parties in it will discuss it," he said.

Yadav's accusation that the Gujarat CM had been set up by corporate groups - a dig at his pro-business and pro-investment approach ââ¬â came a day after RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat virtually endorsed Modi. Bhagwat termed Modi "my friend", a rare show of informality on the part of someone who is supposed to occupy a pedestal in the saffron Parivar.

Bhgawat's apparent acquiescence to the popular mood in the Sangh Parivar is a setback for those within BJP and NDA who had hoped differences between the saffron strongman and the RSS will stop him from being projected as the PM. Much to their chagrin, Modi and BJP chief Rajnath Singh have managed to strike a working relationship: another jolt to the hopes of those who expected the party president to be a spanner in the Gujarat CM's works.

In any case, the pro-Modi mood in BJP is such that pinning hopes on the resistance from jealous peers already appears to be an extravagant expectation instead of a realistic estimate of layout within BJP.

Yadav said that even though the BJP was the largest constituent of the NDA, this was not going to be a factor in chalking out the NDA's national agenda for 2014 elections. He categorically said that Ram Mandir was not going to be a part of this agenda. BJP president Rajnath Singh said recently at the Kumbh Mela that the temple was going to be built if BJP managed to gain majority in Parliament.
