I think Amrutha(Amritha?) was his best, minus the second half. Best acting(minus Madhavan), best technical work, and there was a soul to the film. Many actually. People don't like to see hardcore reality and Mani showed that, which was not wise. Subjectwise, few middle/upper class in India could care about the Srilankan issue. So perhaps, like Uyire, his subject wasn't something important to average Indian, but no other fault in the product. Sakhi was probably an easy film for him to make. Songs, sharp words, good screenplay and good camera work. A love story. Always an easy hit, if the ending is happy. Sakhi, if you look at some aspects, is a juvenile film. | ||

I too haven't watched most of Mani's new films. But I refuse to believe he can't do a hit 'formula' film. But he chooses to make things interesting for him. Anjali is not a formula film, but look how it became a classic. These distributors, are they willing to cap their profit at some point, and start to pass the rest of the profits to producers, directors, etc? This nonsense has to stop. Stop selling and buying beyond market potential. No body goes back begging in business. Unless you are a Tamil film distributor. Close business and go do some other business. | ||

super..only i embrassed by little girl with my clumsy moves and she told me daddy let me dance.. there was a dance contest too.. little girls and their dads can dance to a tune and they will announce winner at the end.. the DJ asked us if we want to participate and my sweetheart said without blinking "NO" | ||

Kadal's distributors protest at Madras Talkies office Mani Ratnam’s Kadal hasn’t turned out to be a profitable experience for any of the stakeholders concerned. The movie has also been receiving mixed reviews from Day 1. And with Vishwaroopam practically cornering all the theaters, Kadal is left in the lurch with just a handful of theaters despite this being just the second week of its run. Yesterday around noon, some of the distributors associated with the movie protested in Mani Ratnam’s Madras Talkies office in Chennai asking for their financial loss to be compensated. The entire area was in a hyper state as the protestors voiced their opinions and demands in an aggravated manner. Police had to intervene and take care of any possible security threats. | ||

There seems to be an unwritten commandment in TFI that any Mani Ratnam or Shankar movie has to be dubbed into Telugu. Sadly, no one seems to care if the story or the setting actually makes sense in Telugu. A movie like "Kadal" has no way of succeeding in Telugu. In fact, the movie is so intensely mired in typical Tamil cinema treatment that it is incomprehensible to even most A center Tamil audience. Kadal is a disaster from the word go. The movie has a small prelude that introduces the main conflict point of the story. Good luck if you miss the beginning. However, the introduction of the kid takes "graphic portrayal of realism in Tamil Cinema" to new heights. You stare disbelievingly at the (in)human nature of the people. Of course, I believe that is how most of those people are. But in the name of being authentic, showing such behavior in excruciating detail even to make a point, is taking it a bit too far. Case in point. Spoiler ahead. The sequence involving the leg of the kid's mother. Oh my God! Christianity is an undercurrent that is present throughout the movie. Thankfully the director shies away from making any sort of statement on what is the right way of being a Christian. It is probably one of those very few movies based on religion that doesn't actually hurt the sentiments of even the hardest religious bigots out there. This, the breath taking cinematography and of course A R Rahman's soul stirring compositions, are the only saving graces of the movie. That does not mean the actors have not done their job correctly. Outstanding performances from all of them - bar none... but sadly the script is so confusing that they fail to make any impact whatsoever. Some of the threads are left dangling at the end. And you wonder, what the heck! This movie is probably suitable for Tamil Nadu interior belt. That too I sincerely doubt. Whoever has come up with the brilliant idea of dubbing it in Telugu - needs to stop following the commandment stated right at the top of this article and instead focus on delivering content where it makes most sense. Kadal tests one's patience levels and it is hard to sit through the movie. Avoid this completely. Do not wait for the DVD. Do not wait for the DTH run. Do not even bother to download an illegal copy. It is not worth it. My rating: Absolutely avoidable. Naaku nacchindi janaalaki nacchadu... Janaalaki nacchindi naaku nacchadu... Nenanthe.. adho type. |
