Vasista:

Not exactly true. If you have multiple cards from same card issuer, you can consolidate the credit line to one card and close the other. Not all issuers allow this, but can be done.

If you have two cards (one opened 10 years ago, one opened 1 year ago); closing down the newer card actually helps.

if both the cards are from two different creditors, there is no way you can consolidate. but if its same creditor, yes there are chances but doesn't work always. I did consolidated mine from Chase though.

Another mis-conception to keep open the oldest card. Even if you close your oldest card, it will be still in your credit history for atleast 7 years. so it doesn't matter.

not really true. its the credit-to-debit ratio that really hurts.

say if you have two cards. one card 10,000 limit and another card 10,000 limit.
you spent 5,000 on first card. so your credit to debit to ratio is 5000/20000 = 1/4.

now assume that you closed second card. now your new ration is 5000/10000 = 1/2 which is higher than previous time because you closed one card. now this will hurt your credit score. the more c-2-d ration, the more hurt to score.

if you have 10-15 cards, you close one and open another....that will really NOT hurt your score.

SonyVaio,

Ultimate Rewards (Saphire Preferred, Ink Bold, INk plus etc) to United/British/Korean/Southwest airlines miles transfer is one-way.

so, UR->UNited transfer is OK, but you can not transfer your United miles to UR.

You can also buy UR points in batches of 1000 points for $25 each (5000 points max per month) if you need a few miles urgently at the last moment. This is cheaper than buying award miles from united at 3.5 cents for each point.

Gotcha,
I am not entirely sure, I could be wrong. I will go back and check my credit reports. I am sure I applied for a Chase card and an Amex card on the same day. Blogosphere unna vallandaroo suggest applying for different banks on the same day. They insist that it is a single pull.

One thing I did notice is, some banks prefer pulling from one particular agency (depending on the state). For eg: when I applied for a Chase card and an Amex card on the same day, Chase pull report from TransUnion and Amex pulled from Experian.

Update: ee post type chesthoo choosa. I see 1 inquiry on Transunion, 1 inquiry on Experian on the same date, 0 inquiries on Equifax.

EMC2, deeniki another advantage - no foreign transactions fees.

BTW, monnaney Amex Platinum koodaa tosesaa. $450 annual fee, 100K points offer. First year ki chaala useful, second year ki aalochinchaali. Here is how to get max value out of it. Amex Platinum offers $200 airline credit per 'calendar' year. So, ee year ki aa credit teesukoni, next year Jan lo malli credit teesukuntey $400 total. rules prakaaram gift cards not allowed antaadu kaani, I bought $200 United gift card (valid for 5 years) and it was re-imbursed/credited in 3 days. Idi kaakunda Global Entry ki $100 application fee is also re-imbursed and credited. So $200+$200+$100 already annual fee kantey ekkuva credits vachesaayi first year ki. Add bonus MR points to it, it is totally worth it for 1 year.

Frequent Flyers ki ayithey inkaa useful because it comes with Airport Lounge Access to American, Delta, US Airways and Alaskan clubs. Besides, you will get Priority Pass Select pass too for international lounge access.

united airlines -> also usable on Lufthansa

AA -> use directly on AA, AA flight upto delhi.

if you are GC or citizen,, you can try British airways card also....you can transfer AA miles to British also.

i recommend Chase Sapphire Preferred card...you can travel points to multiple airlines....or AMEX gold is also good....
