Muslim clerics had commanded Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to block British writer Salman Rushdie’s passage to Kolkata. The writer was scheduled to visit the City of Joy in a promotional programme of Deepa Mehta’s film Midnight’s Children based on his novel but finally was reportedly told by the police to keep off the city, the writer tweeted. “Rushdie ke aane ka programme sunne ke baad mein nei Mamata Banerjee ko phone kiya aur unse pucha ki kya isi din ke liye Musalmaanon ne hi apko vote diya tha (after learning that Rushdie is coming I called the Chief Minister and asked whether the Muslims voted for him to see this day)!” the Shahi Imam of Kolkata’s Tipu Sultan Mosque NR Barqati said on Sunday. The Chief Minister who was then in Darjeeling told the Muslim cleric that she had no information of Rushdie’s visit to Kolkata and promised to block his passage immediately, the Maulana went on record saying. “Mein ne unko bola ab rokiye unko nahin to jhamela hoga aur unho nein mujhe bola ki mein abhi band karwati hoon (I told him that she should stop the writer or else there would be problem and she told me that she would do the needful immediately),” Barqati said. “This was an excellent job that she did in the interest of the Muslim community and I hope the Muslims will be happy with her,” he said. There has been much controversy in the State regarding the ban on Rushdie’s entry in Kolkata even as the civil society came out in big numbers to criticise the Chief Minister for taking a stance that stood starkly against the right to freedom of expression enshrined in the Constitution. Meanwhile, another powerful Muslim cleric, Toha Siddiqi the Pir Zada of Furfura Sharief who reportedly controls the majority Bengal Muslims of the State welcomed Banerjee’s step but iterated this was only a small thing that she had done for the Muslims. “She should not use this to turn the attention of the Muslims from her Government’s lack of performance vis a vis the Muslims. We want her to convert the promises made to the Muslims into action instead of trying to make cheap publicity stunts to win polls.” |
