dreams from my father - alabama

not at all political.. a story everyone can relate to.. especially to kids whose parents are not native citizens...motivational and easy to read.

I agree with Anand. Self help books are too early for teenagers, i am not sure what self help they need. I did not pick up non fiction books till my late teens. I would urge more fiction reading so that they develop a taste for reading, that will become hard to dislodge later on in life. Let them read whatever they can lay their hands on (as long at is it appropriate), they will develop their own interests, character and discretion.

Some books that i would recommend include

Mahabharatha and Ramayana by Rajaji
Haroun and the Sea of Stories by Rushdie
Beastly tales from here and there by Vikram Seth
Swami and friends by RK Narayan
A short history of nearly everything by Bill Bryson
Feluda stories by Satyajit Ray
Our films, their films by Ray

Most of these might be Indian connected, not sure if they might interest NRI kids. I will think through and post more.

Premature aging antaru - you have become too cynical and this was before you got married- so can't blame that either

Coelho's books have a lyrical undertone that has to be felt Alchemist, Zahir - it is not the tale that appeals but something beyond the story :-)

he was reading all fiction starting from harry potter, hunter games, diary of wimpy kid to some non-sense books available from school and public library..i want to introduce some non-fiction books too.

I actually think it is better for kids to get hooked to reading thru fiction and then they will automatically learnt to read other stuff :-) If you force non-fiction on them they may lose interest in reading altogether especially in this age where they have so many audio-visual alternatives - and fiction helps kids fantasize and imagine :-)

Alchemist - Paulo Coelho

I gave fountainhead to my son to read when he was 13 - he enjoyed the book and we had long discussions about it - so it depends on what your kids like, what length of books they will read and so on :-)
